Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The third issue of Steinbeck's second book. Either sheets or plates were purchased by Ballou from Brewer, Warren, and Putnam, the original publisher. Some were bound and issued in a Ballou binding with the Brewer title page (second issue). Others had a tipped-in Ballou title page (third issue) and that describes this book. Green cloth stamped in gilt. This copy has sunning at the head and heel of spine and a slight spine lean. The front hinge shows a little looseness but still holding together well-definitely too tight to reglue. Tiny bit of fraying at the bottom front corner. Black topstain and most of the green cloth still bright, gilt lelttering all readable- see photos. In great shape for its age. The original dust jacket is long gone but a facsimile of the first issue dust jacket is included. Per Goldstone and Payne, the third issue dust jacket was similar or identical to the first issue. STEINBECK, John.. The Pastures of Heaven.. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932, 1932.

Price: US$16040.82 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, of the author's first collection of short stories, in an excellent example of the first issue dust jacket. The work is "the most popular of Steinbeck's three early books. It points the way to most of his subsequent writing" (Moore, p. 18). Steinbeck conceived The Pastures of Heaven as a loosely connected sequence of stories, "each one complete in itself, having its rise, climax, and ending" (quoted in Lisca, p. 57). Goldstone & Payne A2a. Peter Lisca, The Wide World of John Steinbeck, 1958; Harry Thornton Moore, The Novels of John Steinbeck, 1939. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, top edge black, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With dust jacket, designed by Lynd Ward. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine a little faded; slight rubbing and a few tiny spots of silverfishing to unclipped jacket, extremities lightly chipped with short closed tear to front flap fold, overall bright: a near-fine copy in near-fine jacket.

Steinbeck, John.. The Pastures of Heaven.. NY, Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932, 1932.

Price: US$26250.00 + shipping

Description: NY, Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932, first edition, dust jacket. Hardcover. With a first issue dust jacket, his second book, Goldstone & Payne A2a, Morrow 14, this first edition is one of only 1,650 copies actually bound (from a print-run of 2,500 sets of sheets), only a paltry 650 copies were actually sold, this was his first book with what could be called the Steinbeck "sound," the book is comprised of inter-related stories set in a valley that came to represent Steinbeck Country, in these stories something is not quite right with the inhabitants of this otherwise peaceful valley, according to Harry Thornton Moore in his first critical study of Steinbeck's works, The Pastures of Heaven "is the most popular of Steinbeck's three early books. It points the way to most of his subsequent writing," this example of a short story cycle may well be Steinbeck's finest work, scarce when found with the correct dust jacket, those jackets that are noted as 2 mm shorter than the book are second issue jackets. Very good copy in a stunning jacket without any nicks, tears, or chips, extremely scarce thus.

John Steinbeck. The Pastures of Heaven (true first edition in first issue dust jacket, inscribed by John Steinbeck). New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932.

Price: US$50000.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: "The Pastures of Heaven" by John Steinbeck. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932 first American edition first printing (first issue). 8vo. Original publisher's green gilt-lettered cloth, top edge stained black (some minor fading to spine ends, very slightly leaned); original silver dust jacket lettered in blue with gold stars (some minor soiling, creasing or rubbing, chipping with small losses to spine ends and a few edges, slight rubbing primarily to folds). Provenance: Louis Paul (ca 1902-1970), American author and Steinbeck correspondent (presentation inscription, autograph note by Steinbeck tipped in, see below). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, IN THE FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY STEINBECK: "For Louis Paul: that I wish I could write as good as him, John Steinbeck, Los Gatos, 1936." Steinbeck adds a postscript: "I wonder what will become of us now! And I could wish that this book might possibly give you as much pleasure as your wanting me to sign it gives me. J.S." Of the 2,500 copies printed, only 1,650 were bound, and of those, only 650 sold. Ballou later bought the remaining copies, and it has become the most popular of Steinbeck's three earliest novels. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY. [Tipped in:] STEINBECK. Autograph note, to Louis Paul, n.d., n.p. In full: "Where'd you get hold of this. The double imprint B. W. & P. is very rare. Ballou tipped in his house information almost the day of publication. This super first edition I'm told is hard to get. I see that Shumlin has turned down my new playing novel. I grow more and more convinced that any book which gets by easily is a lousy book. It can almost be made axiomatic. Anyway I'll get this off." Steinbeck struck up a friendship with Louis Paul after reading his contribution to the O. Henry Prize Stories of 1934. Steinbeck shares his endorsement of Paul in a 24 November 1937 letter to his literary agents Elizabeth Otis, Anne Laurie Williams and Mavis McIntosh: "I'm bringing you a new client. Louis Paul. He's a swell egg and you will like him. And he's well enough known so that it may not be hard to sell his stories. I like him immensely" (Steinbeck, A Life in Letters, p. 144, 1975). Goldstone & Payne A2a. One of the rarest Steinbeck books on the market.
