Pages are mildly tanned throughout. Text is clear. Contains deckled text block edges. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with bumping to corners. Light crushing to spine. Minor splits causing fraying to cloth at spine ends.

Hinges partially split. Illustrated by Douglas Percy Bliss.

Painter drew on various (mainly classical) sources for his stories, including Herodotus, Plutarch, and Boccaccio, and in turn his work became a sourcebook for Shakespeare (including Romeo and Juliet), Webster, Beaumont & Fletcher, and others.

Description: First edition thus, four volume hardcover set bound in full vellum with black leather spine plates, stamped gilt titling, and teg. The set is marked as no. X/30 copies printed on handmade paper, feautres full color frontispieces, and is housed in a slipcase. All four books have a bit of a musty scent, light bowing to their boards, waving to their text blocks, faint sunning to their spine, and foxing to the vellum and paper that is more severe in some areas. Otherwise, this is a solid, tight, sharp, Good+ set housed in a Good only slipcase, which has a split starting to the upper rear seam, as well as foxing to the interior, bumps with some creasing to the corners, rubbing and edge wear to the panels with areas of peeling to the paper, and areas of light smudging and soiling to the panels.
