Description: Hardcover and dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Clean, unmarked pages. Related ephemera included. 600 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 32 cm. The veneration surrounding the French painter Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) for nearly a century has, paradoxically, contributed to the mystery of his genius. His work has been extensively analyzed, but in fundamental respects it remains incompletely understood. As such it is ripe for the reexamination provided by this volume, published on the centenary of the artist's first one-man exhibition, which was mounted in Paris by Ambroise Vollard. More than 240 large colorplates, illuminated by thoughtful commentaries, and 262 black-and-white illustrations of paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sketchbook pages represent all aspects of Cezanne's oeuvre. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Description: Cézanne; by Francoise Cachin, Isabelle Cahn, Walter Feilchenfeldt, Henri Loyrette, Joseph J. Rishel; Harry N. A brams, Inc. Publishers, New York, in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1996. This volume is published in conjunction with the exhibition Cezanne held at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, September 25, 1995 to January 7, 1996, the Tate Gallery, London, February 8 to April 28, 1996, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, May 30 to August 18, 1996. This volume contains 240+ color plates and 262 B&W Illustrations. Paul Cézanne (1839 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavour to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. Cézanne's often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. The paintings convey Cézanne's intense study of his subjects. Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of us all". The 1907 Cézanne retrospective at the Salon d'Automne greatly affected the direction that the avant-garde in Paris took, lending credence to his position as one of the most influential artists of the 19th century and to the advent of Cubism. This large and very heavy volume, reflecting the high quality of the paper used, 600 pages measuring 304mm X 227mm is in fine condition in a near-fine French-fold dust jacket, that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A truly beautiful book that would be a cornerstone to and Cezanne collection. This very heavy volume will require additional postage.

Paul Cézanne (19 January 1839 - 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of us all." This catalogue offers an exploration of Cezanne's work. It includes catalogue entries on nearly 230 paintings, watercolors and drawings. These works are all reproduced in colour and are accompanied by informative commentaries, further insights are provided by comparative illustrations of almost another 300 works. The book traces Cezanne's stylistic evolution from the early dark and violent canvases to the luminous works that gave different qualities to Impressionism, and finally to the late paintings that broke fresh ground. Also explored here is the artist's preoccupation with several themes and motifs - Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathers and still life. The comprehensive review of the critical response to the artist's work reveals the many interpretations of Cezanne's legacy that have been put forward. A chronology details the life and career of the artist.
