Description: 1st and Limited Edition, number 184 of 300, Riverside Press, Cambridge, Mass. USA 1899. 218pp. Eight plate illustrations, including frontispiece, collated all present complete with intact tissueguards, printed with wide margins on thick creamy paper with attractively untrimmed deckle fore and lower edge. Very good clean tight sound square, tender to hinge at halftitle, holding very firm in joints and hinges. Bound in white cloth over lightly dusted grey boards rubbed to corners, with paper title label and 5 raised bands to spine gently frayed to head and chipped to foot. In addition to his writing, Francis Hopkinson Smith was also an artist and engineer. He wrote many famous stories, received awards for his paintings and built the foundation for the Statue of Liberty.
