Description: Red cloth with gilt titling to spines and black ruling and decoration to both boards of both volumes. Volume I: vi, 409pp, 2pp publishers ads; Volume II: v, (iii), 436pp, (xiipp publishers ads). 76 illustrations in total. A bit of fraying to head and heel of the spines. Both volumes are clean with no marking; the text block is tight and complete but with some age toning. Tips are bent on both volumes with a bit of loss of cloth. Front board on Volume I shows some rubbing and wrinkling of cloth In his Origin of Species, Darwin deliberately excluded discussion of man's place in nature from his argument. In this, his following work, he juxtaposes material from anthropology, primate studies and sociology.

Description: Fifth edition, so stated, with addition and correction. Three quarter tan leather with red marbled boards, text edges and endpapers. 447 pages with pristine foldout diagram at page 114.Spine, with five raised bands, is faded but clearly legible and attractive with gilt decorations. Text block and hinges very tight and pages clean. Previous owner's name written on the front free endpaper and twice-stamped in margins on the title page. Covers lightly scuffed, bottom fore edge of board just showing through at the tips, otherwise a very good copy of an early printing in a desirable binding.
