Description: First edition, first issue. Frontispiece and 2 maps (one folding). 226 pp. 1 vols. 16mo. In 1846 the joint British/American occupation of the Oregon Territory was terminated with the British/ Canadian boundary extended along latitude 49 degrees N to Puget Sound, then to the ocean through Juan de Fuca Strait. The controversy about this boundary division resulted in the famous slogan "Fifty-four Forty or Fight!" This work was apparently written and published shortly before the settlement in June of 1846 as he does discuss the boundary offers by either side and the pros and cons involved. The work covers a history of the settlement of the lands, native tribes, commercial possibilities and trading and other aspects of the area. A very interesting work.
