Condition: Near Fine

Description: First impression of the true first edition. Colour dustwrapper illustration by Biro. ***Near fine in dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean with just a few very light unobtrusive small surface splash marks - not affecting the pastedowns or interior pages. Top edge of text-block stained black by the publisher. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Internally also near fine with a neat owner's name: 'Kate Flint' in red pen to the front pastedown. Pages clean. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 12s 6d net. Very small closed tear to the bottom edge of the front panel. Very small closed tear to the top edge of the back panel, which is also slightly rubbed and discoloured (being matt white). No fading to the spine colour. Dustwrapper bright. ***190mm x 130mm. 184 pages. ***'Three years ago Mr Evelyn Waugh had the disconcerting experience of suffering from a brief attack of hallucinations. He later learned that this was not nearly as rare as he supposed. It is a state of particular interest to a narrative writer. The reason remains strenuously active but the information on which it acts is delusory. ***Recollecting these emotions in tranquility, Mr Waugh has made them the theme of a light novel which should delight all those who live on the border lines of sanity - rather more than half the inhabitants of the kingdom according to medical figures.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***First impression of the true first edition, complete in its original fragile colour-illustrated 1950s dustwrapper, in very nice bright condition. Of interest to collectors of Evelyn Waugh and Biro illustrated dustwrappers. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Price: US$7314.13 + shipping

Description: First edition, one of about fifty large paper copies printed on hand made paper, for private circulation. Original red cloth titled in gilt to the spine. Edges uncut. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front end paper, "Frank + Elizabeth with love from Evelyn" A near fine copy, with the spine a little faded as usual, but a crisp bright copy. Internally fresh with just a little foxing to the endpapers. Waugh knew Frank Pakenham and Elizabeth Harman at Oxford. He also met Pakenham's sister, Pansy who introduced him to her best friend, Evelyn Gardner, to whom Waugh became engaged and briefly and disastrously married. Pakenham's family had many associations among the literary bright young things: his other sister Violet was to marry Anthony Powell. Waugh valued Pakenham's social and political connections, and chose him as godfather to his eldest son Auberon. He was also a model for the character of Erridge, the eccentric socialist peer, in Anthony Powell's Dance to the Music of Time.
