Description: Original cloth (once cream, now handsoiled grey) over boards. Blindstamped designs on both front and back covers, with gilt lettering and decoration. First American illustrated edition, and first American clothbound edition. Lithography by T. Sinclair. Binding strong and tight. Corners bumped. Previous owner's name (several times). Some foxing. Most pages are toned where text is. More free endpapers than we've ever seen in one book - eight in the front and eight in the back! This sweet little book was one of Dickens' Christmas Stories, although ghosts figure heavily in it as they do in "The Christmas Carol." A wonderful addition to any Dickens collection. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall

There was an edition in wrappers issued by Harper & Brothers a month earlier.

First American edition published in cloth. 16mo (6 ½" x 4 ¼"); [1-9] 10-96pp; teal colored cloth over board, blind stamped decorative borders, gilt-stamped lettering and bells hanging from a roof with goblins atop; pale yellow endpapers; gift inscription in pencil dated 1858; 6 fly-leaves; engraved frontispiece and pictorial half-title; 10 engraved plates; age-toning of paper, darkening of text block from acidic ink; a few pencil marks,4 of the rear fly-leaves have penciled graffiti and contemporary drawings of women; binding is tight; fading of boards, chipping at head and tail of spine, bumped corners, light staining; very good minus. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English novelist perhaps most famous for his story, A Christmas Carol. This is the second book in his series of five Christmas novellas, all with strong moral and social messages often involving the disparity between the poor and rich classes. First published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1845. There was a reading of this new story by Dickens to a select audience of friends on December 2, 1844. This is the first American edition to be published in cloth with illustrations.

The book features gilt decorations on the front cover and spine as well as full-page illustrated plates. With a wonderful 2-page illustrated frontispiece. "The Chimes" is the 2nd of five novellas that comprised Dickens's "Christmas Books" (which included "A Christmas Carol"). There is a Dickens centenary stamp affixed to the inside front cover. From the library of A. Edward Newton, esteemed book collector and author (his bookplate is also affixed to the inside front cover). Condition: Light stain at the top edge of the boards; small cloth tears at the corners; bright gilt lettering and illustrations on the front cover, a bit dulled on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Thin, light stain at the top page edges. Consistent light foxing throughout (heavier on the front end papers). Name written in pen on a front end paper.no other writing found. Tiny tear at the upper-outer corner tip of the 1st front end paper.no other tears found. Affixed to the front pastedown is a very nice bookplate (of "A. Edward Newton") as well as a commemorative stamp celebrating the 100th year of Dickens' birth (1812-1912).
