AUSTEN Jane. The Novels of Jane Austen. Emma. The Text based on Collation of the Early Editions by R.W. Chapman. With Notes Indexes and Illustrations from contemporary Sources. Volume IV. Third Edition [Third Impression; this volume only]. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY. Clarendon Press, Oxford, [1946], 1946.

Price: US$54.11 + shipping

Description: 8vo., Third Edition, Third Impression, with frontispiece, 9 plates and several pages of facsimiles in the text; original series binding of green cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. Chapman's masterly edition of the novels was first published in a limited edition of five volumes in 1923. It was the first based on carefully collated texts and the first to feature illustrations from contemporary sources. Demand far outstripped the limited audience and a 'second edition' (in reality a second printing on cheaper stock) was issued in 1926. A 'third edition' (as here) was published in 1933, but since it is produced from the original plates it is still technically a third printing. This third edition, several times re-issued, preserves the three-volume structure of the first edition of 1816, adding frontispieces to each volume together with the other plates and facsimiles, and Chapman's extensive notes and explanatory articles. See Gilson, E150.

Jane Austen. Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park. The Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1946.

Price: US$322.07 + shipping

Description: A two volume set of these works from Jane Austen. Two volumes of original five. Third edition thus, based on the early collections of works by R W Chapman with notes and illustrations. With 13 plates. The text for Mansfield Park also includes the text for Lover's Vows to the rear. Lover's Vows is the controversial play performed by the characters of Mansfield Park in the first volume and it is unusual to have this printed alongside the novel. Sense and Sensibility was Austen's first novel published and a work of romantic fiction. First published in 1811 it follows the Dashwood sisters in their struggles in life after the death of their father. Mansfield Park, first published in 1814, is the third novel by Austen and is of particular literary significance due to the comments on slavery and imperialism. In cloth bindings in original dustwrappers. Externally, smart with some light wear to base of spines. Dustwrappers smart with some chipping and edgwear. Loss to head and tail of spine with some sunning and marks to wraps. Dustwrappers are clipped with prices still present. Booksellers sticker to flyleaf of Sense and Sensibility. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with scattered spotting throughout. Very Good Indeed
