Price: US$7472.39 + shipping

Description: 840 OF 877 SETS, the illustrations printed from the original steel plates or woodblocks (or electrotyped facsimiles of the original woodblocks), titles with Nonesuch device, each novel with colour facsimile of cover of first originally issued part, royal 8vo, original buckram by Leighton-Straker, in various complementary colours - apple-green, cream, black, blue, brown, dark green, fawn, maroon, orange, red and yellow, backstrips with uniform gilt-lettered black morocco labels, ('Dickensiana' in gilt-lettered blue linen, spine ends with slight wear, endpapers faintly toned), top edge gilt on the rough, others untrimmed, labels with a few chips, a couple of marks on backstrips of paler volumes, but generally clean and bright, very good. A handsome set of this attractive and highly readable edition. lauded by contemporary reviewers including 'The Scotsman': 'No more handsome edition of Dickens has yet appeared; nor is it easy to conceive of any which might surpass this one.' The edition was printed in a specially designed and newly cut face, Bulmer, based on a type created by William Martin at the end of the eighteenth century, its aim to be as inconspicuous as possible: 'In Dickens, the style is the man; the type must be neutral lest it alter the accents of the man.' ('Dickensiana') The advertising campaign for the set was unprecedented for the Press, including the extensive Retrospectus and Prospectus, 'Dickensiana', featuring lithograph reproductions printed at the Curwen Press, and the presence of a plate-block of one illustration in each set (thus setting the limitation at 877) from the original Chapman and Hall blocks which the press had acquired. This practice proved highly controversial, David Garnett, in the New Statesman and Nation, describing the dispersal of the historically significant plate-block collection as 'an act of vandalism', though he did admit that 'The Pickwick Papers', the first volume of the set to appear, 'was a most beautifully produced book.' (Dreyfus, p.243). The plate for this set is the woodblock (the scarcest block form of the sets) for the illustration 'Trying -on for the Doll's Dressmaker' by Marcus Stone, engraved by W.T. Green, with several proof pulls, including one mounted (slightly spotted), but without publisher's limitation letter. (Dreyfus 108)

The steel plate included with this set is number 605, "Solemn reference is made to Mr. Bunsby" from Dombey and Son (Chapter 23, facing p.458), engraved by H. K. Browne ('Phiz'), with the typed letter of authenticity on Chapman & Hall headed paper, signed by Arthur Waugh.Intended as a definitive edition of Dickens' works the Nonesuch Press edition was printed using the original steel plates and woodblocks created by Chapman & Hall for the illustrations in the first editions of the books. Each set of the works was accompanied by one of the original engraved plates or woodblocks, of which there were 877. The original steel-engraved plate in this set is by 'Phiz' (Hablot Knight Browne), who was Dickens' friend and the most highly regarded illustrator of his works. G. K. Chesterton once remarked, "no other illustrator ever created the true Dickens characters with the precise and correct quantum of exaggeration. No other illustrator ever breathed the true Dickens atmosphere, in which clerks are clerks and yet at the same time elves" (from ODNB). Dreyfus 108. Language: English

DICKENS, Charles.. The Nonesuch Dickens. Edited by Arthur Waugh [and others].. London The Nonesuch Press. -38, 1937.

Price: US$10587.50 + shipping

Description: 25 volumes, including "Dickensiana" and plate volume, one of 877 numbered sets, 8vo., with illustrations printed from the original plates, original vari-coloured cloth, morocco labels, top edges gilt on the rough, others uncut, light even and uniform fading to spines as usual, a little spotting to the buckram on one or two volume but a really pleasing set. With the original steel plate 'The Dying Clown' from Pickwick Papers, with letter of authenticity from the publisher. Text based upon the Charles Dickens Edition, the last to be revised by Dickens himself. After the Depression of the early thirties, the Nonesuch Press was effectively saved from bankruptcy by the intervention of the American, George Macy. The Dickens was very much his project and it was due to his great energy that the set was produced so quickly. It was described at the time by the Daily Telegraph as "One of the most glorious achievements of publishing in our time. Robert Lynd in the News Chronicle declared it the most pleasant Dickens to read that has ever been published, while The Scotsman observed : No more handsome edition of Dickens has yet appeared; nor is it easy to conceive of any which might surpass this one. As an inducement to subscribers, Macy had advertised the fact that he would distribute one original full-page engraved plate with each set, and supply it with a box which matched the spine designs of the printed books. In 1937, electrotype duplicates of some of these plates were being offered for sale at £30, after a London bookseller had bought duplicate sets of plates for four novels from Chapman and Hall. Macy considered that 877 of the full-page illustrations he had bought from the same source were suitable for distribution by lottery to those subscribing to the Nonesuch Dickens, and accordingly the size of the edition was limited to that number." - Dreyfus. DICKENS, Charles.. The Nonesuch Dickens. Published under the editorial direction of Arthur Waugh, Hugh Walpole, Walter Dexter and Thomas Hatton.. London: The Nonesuch Press, 1937-39, 1937.

Price: US$16244.32 + shipping

Description: First Nonesuch edition, number 37 of 877 sets with an original plate, a desirable set with the variously coloured cloth bindings in uniformly fresh condition. The peculiar limitation is due to the inclusion, enclosed in the 24th volume of each set, of one of the original plates used by Chapman and Hall, Dickens's original publishers, in their first printings of each title. Since they held in their archive 877 such plates - the majority steel but with a number of wood blocks - the limitation was set at this number. The present set includes the steel plate entitled "Free and Easy" by George Cruikshank, which originally appeared in Sketches by Boz. Also included is a proof pull and a letter of authentication from Chapman and Hall signed by Deputy Chairman Arthur Waugh, and numbered 37. Even aside from the inclusion of this Dickensian relic, the edition has always been highly sought after by collectors, the largest project of the Nonesuch Press and one of their great triumphs, esteemed for the quality of its printing, illustrations, and paper. As noted in the Prospectus, collected within Nonesuch Dickensiana, also included here, "it will never be possible for a more complete and perfect edition to be put upon the market". 25 volumes, large octavo. Original buckram in various colours, black morocco label to spines, top edges gilt on the rough, others untrimmed. Including Nonesuch Dickensiana. Illustrated throughout after the original plates; with original steel-engraved plate (see note). A couple of spines very lightly faded, occasional small mark to cloth, overall an excellent set.
