CONRAD Joseph. The Nigger of the ?Narcissus?. A Tale of the Sea. , 1898.

Price: US$960.65 + shipping

Description: First English edition. 8vo., original slate-grey cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, slightly grazed at extremities, top and fore edges uncut. London, William Heinemann. The binding is in Cagle's state (b), one of two which seem to have been used indiscriminately and seem to have no priority: the advertisements are a variant not noted by him, with the 16 page of publishers' advertisements dated 1897 (the earlier of two types) following a four page insert. The American edition takes precedence over the English, where it was published as The Children of the Sea, a marketing decision based not on sensitivity but because people wouldn't buy books about black people. An excellent copy, near fine, with just a very slight wear to the joints.
