Description: First American Edition, preceding the British Edition. First issue without the Lewes and James quote on the title page and with the title page integral [Currey Issue A]. Octavo, original red cloth titled in gilt on spine and front panel. 490 pp. Heraldic bookplate of George H. A novel of politics and sex, "Wells's most autobiographical novel". Originally serialised in The English Review in 1910, its plot was notoriously derived from Wells's affair with Amber Reeves and satirised Beatrice and Sidney Webb. It was "the literary scandal of its day".
