Pages have mild tanning and foxing throughout, moderate at end-papers, paste-downs and text-block edges. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout however binding remains reasonably firm. Crude tape repair to rear board gutter. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Loss of leather at spine ends and joints. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Top edge of text block is dust marked.

Description: 276 pages + 8 page publishers catalogue at rear. Original cloth worn, lacks front free endpaper, half title has inscription "E. A. Barton". Contents clean and tight, uncut edges. Good, contents about VG. *Novel set in America and the town with the same name. Written in collaboration with his brother-in-law. This relationship ended in a street altercation with Kipling being assaulted by the fiery young Ballestier, this resulted in Kipling coming back to England and selling his home called Naulakha in upper New York. Strangely, the house correctly spelled, as opposed to this work which was left unchanged even in later printings? Scarce title by the enigmatic Mr Kipling who's works are fare better than the cakes!

Balestier had died the year before publication, and Kipling married his sister Carrie. They named their house in New England after this collaborative novel. 276, [8 ads]pp.
