Written in gritty, journalistic detail, the story follows a platoon of Marines who are stationed on the Japanese-held island of Anopopei. Mailer, Norman. The Naked and the Dead (SIGNED). Rinehart & Company, Inc., New York * Toronto, 1948.

Price: US$52.50 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: This jacketless copy of "The Naked and the Dead" is 8-1/4 inches tall in brown textured boards with a "flame" device stamped in black to lower corner of front board. Small, half-inch tear to cloth at top of spine. Dated 1948 with no later dates, states "Printed . . . by the Haddon Craftsmen, Inc., Scranton, PA.", but NO statement of edition. Also NO book-club deboss, and no book-club alphanumeric code to gutter of last page of text, so we don't know what edition or printing this thing is, other than the fact it has to be pre-1960. What we do know is that it's signed "Norman Mailer" (name only) to title page, and this is a "live" signature -- the pressure marks of the pen can be seen and felt to verso and even to following page. Mailer's first novel -- of the war in the Pacific -- won him lasting fame, and was considered "hard-bitten" at the time, though modern readers may be a bit surprised to discover that in 1948 the famed tough guy (1923-2007) apparently didn't know how to spell the common (if somewhat coarse) Anglo-Saxon word for reproductive behavior (even in dialog), preferring "fug" for all uses. 721 pp. Reduced from $117.

Description: The Naked and the Dead is a novel written by Norman Mailer. Published by Rinehart & Company in 1948, when he was 25, it was his debut novel. It depicts the experiences of a platoon during World War II, based partially on Mailer's experiences as a cook with the 112th Cavalry Regiment during the Philippines Campaign in World War II. The book quickly became a bestseller, paving the way for other Mailer's works such as The Deer Park, Advertisements for Myself, and The Time of Our Time. He believed The Naked and the Dead to be his most renowned work. It was the first popular novel about the war and is considered one of the greatest English-language novels. A like-new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Cover has no visible wear, no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no writing in the margins. Price: US$165.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Rinehart & Company, 1948, New York. Hard Cover. Book condition: Good. Dust jacket condition: Fair. Unstated edition, indeterminate printing due to the absence of any number line, but clearly a very early printing. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket. 8-1/4" tall, 721 numbered pages. This book is in decent and sound condition: the exterior is square, reasonably clean, free of edge dings with all four corners lightly bumped and lightly worn; both spine ends are bumped and worn (see photo), bottom edges have modest wear; hinges are strong and not damaged in any fashion. Except for an inked name/date/city on the back of the title page, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage; paper is mildly toned and very flexible. Not remaindered or ex-library but possibly/likely a Book Club edition--there is a price on the jacket and no 'slug' on the rear board, suggesting this is not a BCE; but the absence of any printing history and, in red letters on the bottom of the front flap: "A selection of the Book Find Club" is suggestive and a bit suspicious. The dust jacket is very worn, with chips, heavy wear, scratches and scrapes (see photos). But worse--there is masking tape on the back side--along all edges, along both folds and on the entire width of the spine; that tape has not affected the binding or the jacket but has made the jacket rather stiff and a bit fragile. Jacket is now protected by mylar jacket cover.

(8), 721 pp. Internally a very good and well preserved copy with only minor mellowing and some dusting to the page edges. The cloth good only with the spine panel loose from the front board but still whole and attached to the back, some wear to the board edges and corners, dustjacket in good order with very little wear or aging. NORMAN MAILER’S FIRST BOOK AND ARGUABLY STILL ONE OF HIS BEST. Long considered one of the best novels to come out of World War II, and the best to come out of America. It caused a sensation on its initial publication; critics compared the 25-year-old author to Tolstoy and catapulted him to instant literary celebrity. Mailer uses extensive flashbacks and brutally frank battle scenes to tell the story of General Cummings’ invasion of a Japanese-held island in the South Pacific. Believing that "the morality of the future is a power morality," Cummings runs into opposition from Lieutenant Hearn, who refuses to fit into the general’s "fear ladder."
