Condition: Very Good

Description: (in a REPRODUCTION dust jacket) [very lightly shelfwear, spine slightly turned, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase in ink at top of title page]. Christie's second novel, which introduced the characters of Tommy Beresford and Tuppence (Miss Prudence Cowley) -- not yet "the Beresfords," as when the book opens they are merely childhood pals getting reacquainted, whose "united ages certainly would not have totaled forty-five." A few years later they might have qualified as Bright Young Things (in the pejorative sense), but this being the early 1920s (and with Agatha Christie as their creator rather than, say, Evelyn Waugh). they are not just young and adventurous but also practical-minded. They decide to go into business, of sorts, as The Young Adventurers, Ltd., advertising themselves as "willing to do anything, go anywhere," as long as its pays well -- and before you can say "old bean," they find themselves on the trail of a young woman who'd survived the sinking of the Lusitania, and is in possession of some mysterious papers that had been handed to her by a man as she was leaving the doomed ship in a lifeboat. Following this novel, Christie featured the couple in a number of short stories, which were collected in her 1929 book "Partners in Crime" (by which time they had married). Christie clearly had a fondness for the characters -- which are said to have been based on her own marriage -- and returned to them intermittently in later years, with novels published in 1941, 1968, and 1973. Over the years, Tommy and Tuppence have been featured in radio, film and television adaptations; the most recent of the latter, a 2015 BBC production, generated renewed attention to the stories, with one article even going so far as to declare Tommy and Tuppence "Agatha Christie's greatest creation." PLEASE NOTE that the dust jacket on this book is a REPRODUCTION of the original; the jacket is designated "New Edition," although this descriptor does not appear on the book itself.

CHRISTIE, [Dame] Agatha (1890-1976). The Mysterious Mr. Quin. New York, NY: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1930, 1930.

Price: US$2373.11 + shipping

Description: [Mystery novel] FIRST US EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.[8] 290 [2]. Publisher's pink cloth with black titles to spine and upper, and decorated endpapers. With the illustrated dust-jacket, priced at $2.00. Trivial rubbing to the top of the spine, which is mildly toned. Jacket is chipped at the top of the spine, with dulled lettering and a soft vertical crease to each panel. Very good. The story of Mr. Harley Quin, who sparks new life into a quiet New Year's Eve party by unmasking a murderer. The character was author Christie's own favourite creation; Harley Quin is an enigma, who appears and disappears unexpectedlyâ€"and usually by strange tricks of the light caused by stained-glass windows or flickering firelight. His background, family and friends are all a mystery, although his almost supernatural powers of detection are, however, very real.
