John Updike. THE MUSIC SCHOOL - Short Stories (First edition - second state with printer's error corrected). Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1966.

Price: US$83.41 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The true first edition, published by Knopf in the USA in 1966. This copy is in the second state, with the typographical error corrected on page (please see scans). The first state printing has an error on p.46: the poem cited has opening quotation marks at the second line instead of the first. ***Very good in blue paper over mauve cloth-covered boards, with silver titles to the spine. The boards are clean with just a light tape offsetting mark to the front board. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corner tips very slightly creased. Page block edges slightly foxed. Top edge of page block stained yellow by the publisher to match the dustwrapper. No reading lean. Spine tight. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good colour printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of $4.95, and with the date code 9/66 at the bottom corner of the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with the extremities just slightly rubbed and creased. No chips or tears. There are some light handling marks on the dustwrapper, but no fading, although the spine is slightly browned. Hundreds of his stories, reviews, and poems appeared in The New Yorker starting in 1954. He also wrote regularly for The New York Review of Books. His most famous work is his "Rabbit" series (the novels Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit Is Rich; Rabbit at Rest; and the novella Rabbit Remembered), which chronicles the life of the middle-class everyman Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom over the course of several decades, from young adulthood to death. Both Rabbit Is Rich (1981) and Rabbit at Rest (1990) were awarded the Pulitzer Prize.' Description: First edition, first issue. One corner a tiny bit bumped else fine in slight spine-toned, very near fine dustwrapper with two tiny tears. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. A scarce book in this issue.
