Description: Condition is good minus. No dust jacket. Binding is cracked between pages 2 and 3 and between the last leaf of text and the ads. Book is cocked. Spine has slight wear to the ends and edges. Rear cover has some faint staining. Pages are lightly browned, darker at the margins. Bookplate removed from front endpaper.

Description: London: William Heinemann, 1919. First Edition, first issue with three titles by Zangwill to advertisements at rear. Octavo. 263 + 4 pp. advertisements. Green boards stamped in black. No dust jacket. Bookplate of English judge and athlete Montague Shearman to front pastedown. Boards worn at extremities, corners bumped, spine toned, and staining and discoloration along fore-edge of front and rear boards. Binding is sound. Pages toned and brittle. Overall still a Very Good copy enhanced with the presence of Shearman's bookplate. [Stott A22.a].

Description: First edition. 8vo. Original sage green cloth decorated in black. London, William Heinemann. First edition, published about 3 months before the American edition. This copy is from the second issue (the three issues differ only in ads): The first issue has four pages of ads which include three titles by Israel Zangwill, the second issue has those ads removed (by the publisher) with their stubs remaining, and the third issue has four different pages of ads which include twelve titles by Zangwill (and the original stubs still evident). Condition is just about fine, even given the deplorable quality of the paper used.; the only notable flaw is a tape repair on the edge of the rear free endpaper.

There are a few small closed tears to the spine. Fraying to the rear cover joint. Age toning to the pages as is typical with this era.

Description: First edition, second issue with four pages of ads, including one ad for seven, rather than six titles by Eden Philpotts. Cheap paper browned as always, corners a little bumped, a very good copy lacking the dust jacket. This copy Inscribed on the front fly, in what looks like an earlier hand: "E. Ordine, W. Somerset Maugham." A nice copy of one of Maugham's masterpieces. Scarce signed.
