Description: xvii (i) 548 pages, , engraved frontis and half title, and 3 full page plates + text illustrations. Ownership name to front paste down and dated 1883 with corresponding armorial bookplate to end paper There is also a faint signature with date to upper blank margin of the ½ tile. To verso of front-end paper an early handwritten copy of Col Hawkers reference to the book taken from the ninth edition of his work. Both inner hinges were neatly strengthened with cloth. Bound in the publishers blind stamped olive-green cloth, showing rubbing to head tail of the spine and part spine edge a vg â€" copy. Much on practical instructions for every description of inland and coast shooting. Hawker believed Lacy plagiarized his work. Lacy did spend some time with Hawkers puntsman. Riling 522, Chute 377.

Description: First edition. Hard cover published by Whittaker and Co. in London in 1842. Original green cloth covers with blindstamped designs and with gilt lettering on spine. Spine is faded to brown, and is worn and torn at top, with some missing pieces, and worn at bottom, with a scrape. Corners of covers are bumped and bent, with some splitting of the cloth. Covers have some scuffing. Inside front cover has a bookplate from a previous owner and front endpaper has the name of a previous owner and a date of 1842 written in middle. Inner back hinge is split by back cover. Back cover has a bookstore sticker at bottom. Pages have some tanning. Some pages have foxing. Book is in fair condition. Large 8vo, 548 pages, 2 lb.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 548 pages

Description: Rare. A very good+ condition copy of the 1842 first edition, first printing, in the original blind-decorated green cloth, evenly faded. Gilt titles still bright on spine. Binding very good with only light wear to the extremities. Light knock to one corner. Text very good, tight and clean, with only very little very light foxing, just the odd speckle here and there. Yellow end papers, the front free end paper bearing two neat 1843 inscriptions. One barely noticeable, small, neat page margin repair. Tissue-guarded, steel-engraved frontispiece and engraved half-title, plus many woodcuts. Wide-ranging, comprehensive contents, from all aspects of guns and equipment to gundogs and all types of quarry, from game to wildfowl, deer to rooks. An excellent book. See photographs attached. The spine is sun toned to a darker color but the lettering and highlights are still very bright. The binding is tight and the interior and covers are clean. Light spotting to the end papers otherwise the pages are very good. The rear free end paper has a three inch rip without loss of paper. DESCRIPTION: Frontispiece and illustrated half title page with tissue guard between them as well as many woodcut illustrations throughout the book.

With an illustrated title page and frontispiece by T. A. Prior, and an additional 3 plates. With several illustrations take from the original sketches on the author, Captain Lacy, and engraved by E. Landells. In addition the work boasts over 20 in-text illustrations. Collated complete. This particular volume has been rebacked with the original boards and backstrip preserved. A lovely work of shooting history from the mid-nineteenth century, offering a comprehensive look into the art of shooting for the Victorian sportsman. Rather rare and sought after. Rebacked with the original backstrip preserved. Externally lightly bumped to the extremities. Fading to the spine. Small amount of loss to the front and rear pastedowns towards the hinges, most likely due to rebacking. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with light age toning to the extremities of numerous pages, alongside the odd spot. Tidemark to the reverse of the frontispiece. Very Good

The bottom corners of pages 101 and 102 have a smudge that does not affect any illustrations or text and the interior is otherwise very clean and unmarked.
