Contents clean and tight but for very minor browning/soiling. DW with a little soiling/browning, spine darkened, a little rubbing/chipping to edges/spine. Following WWI, T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) felt the need to disappear from public view, so in 1922 he enlisted in the RAF under the name of John Hulme Ross, as oridinary aircraftman 352087 A/c Ross. The book is an autobiographical account of his experiences in the RAF. The title of the book likens the RAF training to a coin factory and the book is critical of the treatment recruits were subject to. The book was generally issued posthumously in 1955. It was subject to some censorship due to the earthy language used and was amended prior to issue.

Description: THE MINT A day-book of the R.A.F. Depot between August and December 1922 with later notes by 352087 A/c Ross T. E. Lawrence. Jonathan Cape, London 1955 reprint of the first open edition. 206pp Hardback. This copy is bound in blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and a stylised RAF eagle embossed to the upper board. The text block is unmarked, bright, white, tight and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is a trifle dusty commensurate with a sixty year old book, there is also a small closed tear to the rear panel it has now been covered in clear, removable, protective film. The Mint is a book written by T. E. Lawrence, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, and published posthumously. It describes his time in the Royal Air Force, working, despite having held senior rank in the army (Colonel), as an ordinary Aircraftman, under an assumed name, 352087 Ross. The book is notable, despite flaws noted by critics, for its sharp observation, for the insight it gives into Lawrence himself, and for the censorship issues around its publication. Ref H 6

It describes his time in the Royal Air Force, working, despite having held senior rank in the army (colonel), as an ordinary aircraftman, under an assumed name, A/c 352087 Ross. The book is notable, despite flaws noted by critics, for its sharp observation, for the insight it gives into Lawrence himself, and for the censorship issues around its publication. The novelist E. M. Forster corresponded with Lawrence, in 1929 writing two detailed letters to him criticising The Mint, which he liked, and advising on how it might be improved. The Mint concerns the period following the First World War when Lawrence decided to disappear from public view. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name, becoming 352087 Aircraftman Ross. The book is a closely observed autobiographical account of his experiences in the RAF. The book covers his initial training at RAF Uxbridge in 1922 and a part of his service at RAF Cranwell, 1925 - 26. Ref HHH5

Bound in gilt lettered and decorated blind embossed wide weave blue cloth, featuring seagull to upper, boards sunned to spine and joint, gently dusted to rear. This Edition is of interest since it is the bowdlerized, censored Edition, wherein the barrackroom slang of the soldiers has been removed and replaced with blanks in the text. The 1973 Edition replaced the offending words. Further, the Ac Ross mentioned is Lawrence himself, a pseudonym assumed when he entered the RAF. When discovered he was discharged but allowed to reenlist in the Tank Cops under the name of Shaw. The change of names has been attributed to Lawrences disturbed mental state as a result of his wartime experiences. This book is a great addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike.

Lawrence, T.E. Writing as A/c John Hulme Ross. Introduction by A.W. Lawrence.. THE MINT: A DAY-BOOK OF THE R.A.F. DEPOT BETWEEN AUGUST AND DECEMBER 1922 WITH LATER NOTES.. Jonathan Cape, London, 1955.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 206 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H) - dark green cloth with blind embossed eagle on front cover, gold lettering on spine, dark green stained top edge. "When in 1922 T.E. Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hulme Ross, he was in a strange physical and mental state as the result of his war experiences. Upon the discovery of his identity he was discharged, but was allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the name Shaw, under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. From his notes, many times re-written and revised, he constructed 'The Mint' - 'an iron, retangular, abhorrent book', he called it, 'one which no man would willingly read'. It does not correspond to that description. In the main it is a highly subjective account of Lawrence's life in the R.A.F. Though resentfully critical of the treatment to which he and other recruits were subjected, it is not self-pitying. It is often robustly entertaining, and the character sketches are brilliant examples of Lawrence's literary skills. He had an acute ear for conversation: in fact, some of the dialogue so faithfully records habitual barrack-room words that it has been deemed inadvisable to reproduce them in the ordinary edition of the book." Blanks in the text replace the 'offensive' words. Light edge wear, slight fading at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine area, a few tiny closed tears, light browing at edges and on spine, very light soiling, small colour stain on inside of rear panel.

Description: London: Jonathan Cape, 1955, First Edition. Original blue cloth boards, with some whitening to the bottom of the front and rear boards. Tanned paste downs and end papers, with a signatue to the half title. Dust jacket edge worn with tanned spine and some loss, 2 inch split half way down the dj spine joint folds. Lawrence made his way into the service on two occasions by using adopted names. In August 1927, writing from Karachi, he told Edward Garnett that he had arranged notes in sections and was copying them as a Christmas gift to Garnett. Lawrence told Garnett that he wrote the book tightly, "because our clothes are so tight, and our lives so tight in the service. There is no freedom of conduct at all." The typescript, made at Garnett s order from the actual manuscript, was revised by Lawrence just before his death and it is that text which the present work follows. Lawrence had intended to print a limited edition himself on a hand-press and had already procured enough copies for its frontispiece of a reproduction of a portrait drawing by Augustus John before his untimely death in a motoring accident. The present limited edition is then, the only one available and most closely followed T.E.L s wishes according to his brother A.W. Lawrence. 206pp Approximately 10 inches tall. Published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1955. First Edition (see note below). 4to up to 12" tall. 206 pages. Blue cloth boards with blind stamped bird front, gilt spine titles, top edge stained blue. The Mint is divided into three parts: Part I: The Raw Material, Part II: In the Mill, Part III: Service. The book's title reflects Lawrences comparison of RAF training to the operations of a mint (coin) factory. The book is an autobiographical account of T.E. Lawrences experiences following the First World War when he enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name, becoming 352087 Aircraftman Ross. The book covers his initial training at RAF Uxbridge in 1922 and a part of his service at RAF Cranwell, 192526. Lawrence stated that the book should not be published until after his death. In a letter from T. E. Lawrence to E. M. Forster summarized in the introduction by his brother A. W. Lawrence: "he felt unable to publish the book because of 'the horror the fellows with me in the force would feel at my giving them away. so The Mint shall not be circulated before 1950. Lawrence's brother took the further precaution of substituting "new names" in the expurgated edition for characters in A/c Ross's squad "in all passages which might have caused embarrassment or distress". Due to censorship issues around its publication, objectional words were also omitted and blank spaces left in their stead. Due to censorship issues around its publication, objectional words were also omitted and blank spaces left in their stead. In order to establish copyright, a limited edition of 50 copies was published by Doubleday, Doran and Company in 1936. Of this limited edition only 10 were offered for sale at the enormous price of $500,000 each. In 1955, Jonathan Cape published a limited numbered edition of 2000 books in slipcase. This volume also published by Jonathan Cape in the same year is the first English edition with dust jacket.

LAWRENCE, T.E. (1888-1935). The Mint, by 352087 A/c Ross. A Day-book of the R.A.F. Depot between August and December 1922 with later notes. London: Jonathan Cape, 1955, 1955.

Price: US$76.32 + shipping

Description: [History] FIRST EDITION. Small Quarto (25 x 19cm), pp.206. Publisher's air force blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and RAF wings motif in blind to upper board, top edge blue. Cream dust jacket featuring black and mauve titles, priced at 17/6. Some minor spotting, a few marks to covers, jacket gently toned to the spine. Very good indeed. Lawrence's 'The Mint' is a memoir of his experiences as an ordinary aircraftman in the Royal Air Force; working from a notebook he kept while enlisted under the assumed name of John Ross, Lawrence wrote of the daily lives of fellow servicemen and about his feelings towards the RAF. During this period he participated in the development of rescue motorboats for downed aircraft. The book, with its sparse and sharp prose, is stylistically very different from 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', and was published posthumously, edited by his brother Prof. A.W. Lawrence.

For The Mint Lawrence worked from a notebook that he kept while enlisted, writing of the daily lives of enlisted men and his desire to be a part of something larger than himself: the Royal Air Force. Price: US$104.50 + shipping

Description: First Edition. 4to, publisher’s original blue cloth, gilt lettered on the spine, and in the original printed dustjacket. 206 pp. A handsome copy, internally near fine, the paper fresh. The blue cloth is just lightly rubbed a touch at the tips and slightly age mellowed, the jacket is whole and attractive with some age, a little spotting and some rubbing, the spine toned. FIRST EDITION. There is no freedom of conduct at all." The typescript, made at Garnett’s order from the actual manuscript, was revised by Lawrence just before his death and it is that text which the present work follows. Lawrence had intended to print a limited edition himself on a hand-press and had already procured enough copies for its frontispiece of a reproduction of a portrait drawing by Augustus John before his untimely death in a motoring accident. Of this book, which followed Lawrence's great epic, the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, B.H. Liddell Hart wrote: "[A]fter some years, he made a fresh attempt on a large scale, an attempt at supreme realism---in a record of daily life in the Air Force which he christened The Mint. This he himself thought was his best writing---less 'mannered' and pretentious than the Seven Pillars. The present edition is then, the only one available and most closely followed T.E.L’s wishes according to his brother A.W. Lawrence.

Description: Fpu 1955. Tiny amount of foxing to the prelims and an ownership crimp to the ffep. Jacket is not price clipped and has minor marks and light dulling down to the spine. 206pp. The Mint is a book written by T. E. Lawrence, 'Lawrence of Arabia', and published posthumously. The novelist E.M. The book covers his initial training at RAF Uxbridge in 1922[2] and a part of his service at RAF Cranwell, 1925-26. The book is divided into three parts: Part I: 'The Raw Material', with 29 chapters (many are 2 or 3 pages); Part II: 'In the Mill', with 22 chapters; Part III: 'Service', with 18 chapters. "The book's title likens the R.A.F. training to a coin factory, with the men as 'The Raw Material' (part I) and life in the training camp as being 'In the Mill' (part II) that stamps the coins out of the blank metal."

Description: [2], 206pp. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt, printed paper dustwrapper. Some edge wear, cloth fading and marked towards all edges. Minor loss to head of spine on the toned jacket, shelf-wear to edges, predominantly top. Spotting to endpapers, with the bookplate of Richard L. Calvert Williamson to the front inner board. With 10 newspaper clippings relating to Lawrence, 5 photocopied articles, and 2 postcards of T. E. Lawrence, addressed to Richard Williamson. From the Williamson family library, recently dispersed. When in 1922 T. E. Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hulme Ross, he was in a strange physical and mental state as the result of his war experiences. Upon the discovery of his identity he was discharged, but was allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the name of Shaw, under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. From his notes, many times re-written and revised, he constructed The Mint. In 1955 Cape published 2000 limited de-luxe copies and a trade issue of the same edition which had all the objectionable words lifted out of the text. Henry Williamson (1895-1977), novelist and writer on natural history and the English countryside, is predominantly remembered as the author of Tarka the Otter (1927) for which he won the Hawthornden Prize. His wartime experiences on the Western Front having altered his life inexorably, he spent the remainder of his post-war life in Devon, Norfolk and Suffolk, writing naturalistic novels very much in the romantic tradition. T. E. Lawrence was a dear friend of Williamson, who published 'The Genius of Friendship', an account of their correspondence in tribute to him, six year's after Lawrence's tragic death. Size: Quarto

Price: US$254.40 + shipping

Description: First UK edition, limited issue, number 877 of 2,000 copies. This edition was preceded by the 1936 US edition, intended purely to establish copyright with only 50 copies printed and ten of these offered for sale at the prohibitive price of $500,000. "One of Lawrence's avowed purposes in joining the RAF was to write of the ranks from the inside. He began immediately making notes when he enlisted in 1922. With his dismissal in January 1923, because of unfavourable publicity, the project was set aside, not to be taken up again until he was posted to India in 1927. In March 1928 he sent a clean copy of the revised text to Edward Garnett [who] had copies typed which were circulated to a small circle, among them Air Marshal Trenchard", whose response "led Lawrence to guarantee that it would not be published at least until 1950" (O'Brien). In 1936 the manuscript was sent to America and "in order to control publication, it was found necessary to have a copyright edition published". Based on a late revision by Lawrence, the present version was set up by Cape in 1948 but not published until after the death of an officer mentioned unfavourably in the text. The trade issue had the "objectionable words" omitted by physically lifting the type to leave blank spaces. O'Brien A172. Quarto. Original blue quarter pigskin, spine lettered in gilt, blue cloth sides, comb-marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With slipcase printed in black and pink as issued, spine numbered in pencil. Title page printed in red and black. Corners a touch rubbed, slipcase soiled: a fine copy.

Price: US$269.50 + shipping

Description: First edition. Included with the book are a number of clippings or illustrations concerning T.E. Lawrence. Large 8vo, publisher’s original blue cloth, gilt lettered on the spine, in the original printed dustjacket. 206 pp. A fine copy, the dustjacket in excellent condition and only slightly mellowed on the spine panel. FIRST EDITION IN THE DUSTJACKET. Lawrence.

Price: US$298.93 + shipping

Description: FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE. Publisher's blue morocco-backed buckram boards. One of 2000 copies numbered in ink. Printed on fine laid paper with marbled endpapers, deckle edges, top edge gilt. Contents very clean, binding unmarked. A fine copy in original printed card slip-case (slightly bumped, toned to extremities). A.W. Lawrence.

Previous owner has noted "Presentation copy, formerly Marshall Sisson's; I bought this book from Blackwell's. on 23 October 1985.": claim not verified, but certainly reasonable, as the named architect once built a house for A. W. Lawrence, and also corresponded with Liddell Hart, Lawrence's biographer. (Clements pp. 38-39). This is the first English edition (limited issue - see O'Brien A172), published at approximately the same time (February, 1955) as the first English unlimited edition, and contains the partially expurgated text (by which is meant that 'objectionable' words have been omitted from the text, leaving blank spaces - the words were restored in the 1973 definitive edition).

Description: First UK edition, first impression, trade issue, of Lawrence's insider account of his time in the RAF, publication of which was delayed in Britain for almost three decades. A brutal but honest account, the book likens RAF training to a coin factory. "One of Lawrence's avowed purposes in joining the RAF, though not the only one, was to write of the ranks from the inside. He began immediately making notes when he enlisted in 1922. With his dismissal in January 1923, because of unfavourable publicity, the project was set aside, not to be taken up again until he was posted to India in 1927. While in India he edited the text of his earlier notes and began revisions. In March 1928 he sent a clean copy of the revised text to Edward Garnett. Garnett had copies typed which were circulated to a small circle, among them Air Marshal Trenchard. Trenchard's concerned response led Lawrence to guarantee that it would not be published at least until 1950" (O'Brien). An edition of 50 copies was published in America in 1936 to ensure copyright. Full publication was delayed until 1955, after the death of an officer described unfavourably. Both the British and American editions were published that year, this British edition with a simultaneous trade and limited issue, the former somewhat expurgated. O'Brien A173. Quarto (243 x 182 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Bookplate of Burnell family to front pastedown. Spine lightly sunned, a few spots to sides: an excellent copy.

Price: US$825.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, limited issue, Number 461 of 2000 copies only. 4to, original half publisher's morocco and cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, t.e.g., in the printed slipcase. 206. An extremely fine copy, bright and clean, as mint. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE. The present limited edition is then, the only one available and most closely followed T.E.L’s wishes according to his brother A.W. Lawrence.

LAWRENCE, T. E. (BINDINGS - GATLEY). THE MINT: A DAY-BOOK OF THE R.A.F. DEPOT BETWEEN AUGUST AND DECEMBER 1922. Jonathan Cape, London, 1955.

Price: US$1976.00 + shipping

Description: 252 x 183 mm. (10 x 7 1/4"). 2 p.l., 3-206 pp. Attractive olive green morocco by Gatley (signed in pencil on rear pastedown), upper cover with abstract design of 18 inlaid small panels in khaki, ivory, black, and tan morocco, lower cover with central panel inlaid with dark brown rectangles in various sizes arranged to resemble a stone wall, smooth spine with gilt titling, turn-ins with decorative gilt roll. In a suede-lined green buckram slipcase. Pencilled note on front pastedown attributing the binding to 'K. Gatlley" [sic]. ◆Spine gently and evenly sunned to a lighter hue, otherwise a pristine copy. Described by DNB as "a brutal but faithful record" of life in an air force training school, this memoir by the man known as "Lawrence of Arabia" comes in a binding which, though abstract in design, suggests a military garrison through its colors and shapes. A national hero after his daring exploits in the Middle East during World War I, Lawrence (1888-1935) enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name in 1923. According to DNB, "Lawrence's motives for enlistment were complex. He had a genuine interest in machineryâ€"this was the period which saw his love affair with Brough Superior motorcyclesâ€"and between 1929 and 1935 he worked on the development of seaplane tenders and air-sea rescue craft. Lawrence also once expressed the hope that, having led from above, he could lead from below in a service which had captured his imagination during the war. The RAF also provided him with a relatively secure refuge from the intrusions of the press." The present text vividly describes his experiences at the recruitment office, in basic training, and in regular service. We have been unable to find any information about the binder, but the artisan at work here combined fine technical skill with an artist's refined sense of color and design.
