Condition: Near Fine

Description: This illustrated version is umusual. Wonderful sailing ships decorate the end-papers and there are 6 full page colour illustrations by Rowland Hilder, and lots of little b and w ones add to the exciting tale. The spine is a little faded. There is a short split to the top right hand side of the spine. A short handwritten name and date from 1942 to the half-title page. ( I happen to think that this is Masefield's masterpiece but rather oddly, author Roald Dahl has thriftily transported John Masefield's own witches straight out of "The Midnight Folk" book for his own children's book, "The Witches." I'd like to think Dahl was unaware of this, but I'm not at all sure. The circumstances are absolutely similar!
