Covers show some mild wrinkles in cloth and a fairly light crease near the upper edge of Volume II Ink stamp of a masonic lodge is seen on the upper edge of the text blocks. Private library book plate on front paste downs. Volumes remain tight and are otherwise bright and clean.

Sold from an institution with its bookplates on front paste-downs and free endpapers, and neat blind stamp on titles. 'It will thus be seen that this edition is very complete, as it has the various appendices from all the past editions. There is also a full index. As in the second edition [1857] there are thirty-four chapters instead of the original thirty-five, owing to two being made appendices, 'The Damascus Caravan' being numbered as a separate chapter' (Penzer). Burton's classic account was first published in 1855. Penzer, p.54.

Photographic frontispiece of Isabel Burton in Vol. I, and color frontispiece of Burton in Arab disguise in Vol. II. Frontispieces with foxed tissue guards. Touch of foxing on exterior leaves. Illustrated bookplates of Johannis Naish on inside covers, dated 1923. A manuscript letter addressed to John, dated 7. IX 07, laid in, indicating the volumes were donated to a missionary to help him with his proselytizing. Volume I with light soiling, tiny chips at foot of spine and a touch of dampstaining, rippling on the front cover, but still a nice set. Richard F. Burton (1821-1890) was an English explorer and Arab linguist, disguised himself as a Dervish in order to gain entrance to Mecca and Medina in 1851-1853.

He criticised the colonial policies of the British Empire, though he was a captain in the army of the East India Company, serving in both India and the Crimean War.Burton was known for his translation of 'The Arabian Nights' and 'The Perfumed Garden', as well as for travelling to Mecca in disguise, at a time when non-Muslims were forbidden entry, and for travelling with John Hanning Speke in search for the source of the Nile.Including;'Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah and Meccah', complete in two volumes. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Some minor marks to the boards and spines, a little heavier to the rear board of Volumes I and II, and to the boards of Volume VII. Spines are very lightly faded. Faint ring marks to the front board of Volume II. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Rear hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with some scattered spots mostly to the first and last few pages. Very Good
