Everson, William. The Masks of Drought. Black Sparrow Press, Santa Barbara, California, 1980.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 92, [6], Photo. The book contains 19 poems written by William Everson, on topics including Storm-Surge, Blackbird Sundown, Rattlesnake August, The Visitation, Bride of the Bear, Buck Fever, The Summer of Fire, The High Embrace, and Spikehorn. William "Bill" Everson (September 10, 1912 - June 3, 1994), also known as Brother Antoninus, was an American poet of the San Francisco Renaissance and was also a literary critic, teacher and small press printer. Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life, Everson was a great admirer of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board, in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. In 1943, he was sent to a Civilian Public Service (CPS) work camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon. In Camp Angel at Waldport, Oregon, with other poets, artists and actors such as Kemper Nomland, William Eshelman, Kermit Sheets, Glen Coffield, George Woodcock and Kenneth Patchen, he founded a fine-arts program. During his time as a conscientious objector, Everson completed The Residual Years, a volume of poems that launched him to national fame. The author's honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1949, a Pulitzer nomination in 1959, the Commonwealth Club of California's Silver Medal in 1967, the Shelley Memorial Award in 1978, and the Book of the Year Award of the Conference on Christianity and Literature, an affiliate of the Modern Language Association, also in 1978. In "Kingfisher Flat", perhaps the key poem of the series, the figures of Merlin and Niniane are drawn from Arthurian legend, but rather than following the version of Mallory or that of Tennyson, both of which depict the sage ensorcelled by a vixen, the author has utilized the reflections of Heinrich Zimmer in The King and the Corpse, who saw the pair in terms of the archetypal attraction between Wisdom and Folly, and so have retained the usage employed there. California is burning!" The searing drought of 1976-77 is the backdrop to this poem cycle. Famine marked on a calendar of feasts humbles human, plant, and beast between twin tensions (loss and menace), twin attractions (desire and death). In an "invasion of awe" before the inexorable "vulturine horde," Everson witnesses a wildfire of tooth, claw, and "accidental" holocaust. The graceful, the innocent, the vicious, or the strong---All are prey: "We think of the snake./ lurking, the vibration of evil, / Coiling." Which is mask? Which is real? The evil coiled and ready? Or the "flush and shimmering splendor of life?" Everson's lyrics envision the contradictions, losing none of the beauty, dread, or demonic power and vengeance. Everson is also known as Brother Antonius. Book number 71 of 250 hardcover Limited Edition copies signed by the author.
