L. Frank Baum. The Land of Oz (Popular Edition). The Reilly & Lee Company, Chicago, IL U.S.A., 1904.

Price: US$44.97 + shipping

Condition: Poor

Description: Originally, Baum did not intend for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) to have any sequels, but it achieved a greater popularity than any of the other fairylands he created. Due to Oz's worldwide success, Baum decided to return to it four years in this sequel, The Land of Oz, the second in the series. L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) is one of the most celebrated children's authors of all time. He was also a playwright and journalist. Best remembered for the American classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, thirteen subsequent volumes in the original series, as well as a spin off-series of six early readers. A musical stage version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz opened in Chicago in 1902 (the first to use the shortened title "The Wizard of Oz"), then ran on Broadway, and toured the USA afterward. The stage version starred Anna Laughlin as Dorothy Gale, alongside David C. Montgomery and Fred Stone as the Tin Woodman and Scarecrow respectively, which shot the pair to instant fame. The end-pages of this copy has photos of Montgomery and Stone in costume as the Tin Woodman & Scarecrow among the illustrations of characters from this story. John Rea Neill (1877?1943) was a magazine and children's book illustrator primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz, including L. Frank Baum's, Ruth Plumly Thompson's, and three of his own. His pen-and-ink drawings have become identified almost exclusively with the Oz series. He did a great deal of magazine and newspaper illustration work which is not as well known today. Neill was first commissioned to illustrate The Marvelous Land of Oz, the second Oz book L. Frank Baum wrote, published in 1904; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz had been illustrated by W. W. Denslow, with whom Baum argued and lost contact afterward. The 1939 MGM adaptation of the first Oz book would become a landmark of 20th-century cinema. This copy was retired from a public library. Hardcover has been modified with thick tape replacing original spine as well using cloth-backed tape to attach covers to text. Originally with burgundy cloth boards and a full color illustration pasted on front, this copy has no DJ. Cloth on cover-edges worn through to cardboard. End-papers are scarred from removal of library pastings, ffep torn out. Interior is tight and unmarked, although pages are brittle, creased, and stained with handling & age. Appears complete. Copyright 1904. Reverse of title page says published July, 1904, but I don't believe this copy was printed then. This is because the title page lists Baum as author of titles published after 1904 and only the frontis is a full color illustration. Cover proclaims this is a "Popular Edition," which usually implies a less expensively produced version of the original - perhaps in the same format as others in a series to be collected as a set. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.

Baum, L. Frank; Neill, John R.. THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ. Reilly & Britton, Chicago, 1904.

Price: US$6000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, second printing of the second Oz book, and the first illustrated by J.R. Neill - who would define the iconography for the series as a team with Baum. The second Oz books makes two supporting characters from the WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ into the main characters: the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. Baum hadn't initially intended that the world he created in Oz would become the setting for an entire series, but the success of the first title - and especially its launch into fame with the theatrical adaptation - convinced Baum to create the "sequel." The choice of the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow as the leads was indeed informed by the success of the Wizard of Oz play: the comedic actors Montgomery and Stone, who played those two characters in the theatre adaptation, were considered key to its success. After a row with W.W. Denslow, the illustrator of the first Oz book, Baum's sequel was in need of a new collaborator. Publisher Reilly & Britton approached Neill, then only 26, for the project. The match proved so seamless that Neill would go on to illustrate every Oz book by Baum from that point onwards, as well as the sequels by Ruth Plumly Thompson, and he even wrote a few Oz books himself. 9'' x 7''. Original red pictorial cloth titled in dark blue outlined in silver (binding B). Photo-pictorial endpapers of Montgomery and Stone. Illustrated by J.R. Neill with numerous full- and partial-page black & white images and 16 color plates on glossy stock inserted throughout the text block (plate typically facing page 10 is here tipped in facing page 128). 287, [1] pages. Hinges carefully repaired, with spine ends expertly reinforced, light rubbing to spine. Endpapers gently toned. Silver of pictorial binding unrubbed and bright.

Price: US$9500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing of the follow up to THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. Returning characters Scarecrow and Tin Man are joined by new favorites like Jack Pumpkinhead and the Woggle Bug in a fantasy adventure with political machinations in the kingdom of Oz. Aspects of this Oz book were adapted (along with OZMA OF OZ) into the 1985 cult film RETURN TO OZ. According to Baum bibliographer Bienvenue, there were five major printings of this title; the first printing, as here, is quite scarce on the marketplace today - and in fact, scarcer than the first/first of the book's legendary predecessor, THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. 9'' x 7''. Original red pictorial cloth titled in dark blue on spine panel and in blue and silver on front cover (Bienvenue's Binding B), the spine with a decorative image of General Jinjur standing atop an emerald. Illustrated with numerous full and partial page black & whites, 16 color plates on glossy stock inserted throughout the text block by J.R.NEILL and photo-pictorial endpapers of Montgomery and Stone. Last typeset line on copyright page reads "All rights reserved," caption of illustration facing p. 23 "I DON'T WANT TO BE A MARBLE STATUE." 287, [1] pages. Short paper mends to a few margins, front hinge carefully strengthened, some unobtrusive areas of touch up and repair to cloth. Interior with light occasional spotting, else clean and bright. Presents well.
