Pages are clean and unmarked., foxing on edges. Nelson Doubleday (imprint of Science Fiction Book Club) hard cover with dust jacket, July 1970 edition but July 1975 printing (code G20), SFBC #2338, 179 pages, cover art by Frank Frazetta. 8vo (8.5" x 5.75") First in series, followed by The Gods of Mars, The Warlord of Mars, and others. Filmed as John Carter. A Princess of Mars was first serialized in All-Story magazine in 1912 as Under the Moons of Mars, by Norman Bean; it was published in book form by McClurg in 1917. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a sub-genre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Barsoom series inspired a number of well-known 20th century science fiction writers, including Jack Vance, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, and John Norman. The series was also inspirational for many scientists in the fields of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life, including Carl Sagan, who read A Princess of Mars when he was a child.

Book Club Edition (Frazetta illustrated), 6 volumes plus 1 bonus volume: Barsoom; Edgar Rice Burroughs and the Martian Vision (1976), by Richard A. Lupoff. All 6 original Doubleday Editions were published between 1970 and 1977, and these were the first Burroughs Mars editions illustrated by the legendary fantasy illustrator Frank Frazetta, who provided full-color covers for 5 of the 6 books, as well as in-text illustrations in black and white. The last volume, Llana of Gathol and John Carter of Mars, was illustrated instead by Richard Corben, a highly regarded and accomplished illustrator and graphic novelist in his own right.
