Complete in two volumes. xi, [12]-283; 288 pp. Original brown cloth, gilt titles, blind-stamped borders and decorations. A novel by the author most well-known for The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. The Marble Faun: Or, The Romance of Monte Beni, also known as Transformation, was the last of the four major romances by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was published in 1860. The Marble Faun, written on the eve of the American Civil War, is set in a fantastical Italy. The romance mixes elements of a fable, pastoral, gothic novel, and travel guide. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 ? May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. Nathaniel Hathorne was born in 1804 in the city of Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne. He later changed his name to "Hawthorne", adding a "w" to dissociate from relatives including John Hathorne, a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College and graduated in 1825; his classmates included future president Franklin Pierce and future poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, leaving behind his wife and their three children. Much of Hawthorne's writing centers around New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. His published works include novels, short stories, and a biography of his friend Franklin Pierce.

First U.S. edition, first printing. This copy agrees with Clark's points for his first printing, including signature mark "1*" on page ix of volume one. Published simultaneously (or nearly so) with the UK edition, which was titled THE TRANSFORMATION . Hawthorne's last major work of fiction, making use of his travels in Europe, especially Italy, in the late 1850s. As in most of his work, the weird and fantastic smolders underneath mundane events. "THE MARBLE FAUN, though it is severely flawed in other ways, is a good example of fairy tale and novel moving in opposite directions to good effect. As a fantasy, the story tells of a young man's journey to maturity. Donatello leaves home, meets the princess, slays the evil magician, flees, and ultimately, one hopes, gains both kingdom and bride. In the real world, however, Donatello's act is a crime, and his story is not a fairy tale but tempered tragedy." - Attebery, The Fantasy Tradition in American Literature, p. 51. Bleiler (1978), p. 96. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). BAL 7621 (noted printing 1). Clark A23.3.a (plate variant A). Cloth worn at edges, spine ends chipped, a few scattered stains to text block of volume one, most noticeably to last leaf of the preliminaries and first two leaves of text, a tight, good copy. HAWTHORNE Nathaniel. The Marble Faun: or the Romance of Monte Beni. , 1860.

Price: US$346.48 + shipping

Description: First American edition. 2 vols., 8vo., original brown cloth decorated in blind on covers and lettered in gilt on spine. Boston, Ticknor & Fields. A slightly compromised copy that yet maintains some dignity. The heads of both spines and the foot of one are restored and the joints are repaired. The whole has that slightly indefinable feel of having been soften by handling, including bruising to the corners, though the text block is actually clean and square. With an interesting Italian provenance, bearing the blindstamp ex-libris of the heiress Giannalisa Feltrinelli, mother of Giangiacomo, the publisher of Doctor Zhivago and The Leopard, and the ultimate champagne socialist, who died while planning a terrorist attack.

Rear free endpage is missing half. 283 pp +16 pp (ads), 288pp. Overall in GOOD condition. The Marble Faun is Hawthorne's most unusual romance, and possibly one of the strangest major works of American fiction. Writing on the eve of the American Civil War, Hawthorne set his story in a fantastical Italy. The romance mixes elements of a fable, pastoral, gothic novel, and travel guide. The climax comes less than halfway through the story, and Hawthorne intentionally fails to answer many of a reader's questions about the characters and the plot. (Complaints about this led Hawthorne to add a facetious Postscript to the second edition, wherein he continues to fail - purposefully - to answer most of these questions.) Vol. 1 has a slight trace of dampstaining that begins at the far right on the top edge, no more than 4" into the leaves throughout the entire volume, NOT interfering with any of the text, and barely noticible. Also, Vol. 1 has a small (less than 2") Tear at the hinge, which reveals the boards below, and is properly considered minor shelfwear. Vol. 1 slightly cocked. Very little foxing. Both volumes have bookplates of O.H. Campbell, M.D. on the front pastedowns. Vol. 2 has a small contemporary (1890) ownership signature to the second free endpaper. The binding and interior of Vol. 2 is superb. Hinges strong, binding square. Overall a VERY GOOD set in BEAUTIFUL CUSTOM SLIPCASES.

The fragility-and the durability-of human life and art dominate this story of American expatriates in Italy in the mid-nineteenth century. Befriended by Donatello, a young Italian with the classical grace of the "Marble Faun," Miriam, Hilda, and Kenyon find their pursuit of art taking a sinister turn as Miriam's unhappy past precipitates the present into tragedy. Hawthorne's 'International Novel' dramatizes the confrontation of the Old World and the New and the uncertain relationship between the 'authentic' and the 'fake' in life as in art. The author's evocative descriptions of classic sites made The Marble Faun a favorite guidebook to Rome for Victorian tourists, but this richly ambiguous symbolic romance is also the story of a murder, and a parable of the Fall of Man. As the characters find their civilized existence disrupted by the awful consequences of impulse, Hawthorne leads his readers to question the value of Art and Culture and addresses the great evolutionary debate which was beginning to shake Victorian society. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Price: US$742.50 + shipping

Description: 2 volumes. First Edition, with Vol. I being Clark's printing four with sixteen page catalogue in the rear dated March and Vol. II being printing five and with the ad catalogue dated October. 8vo., publisher's original brown cloth lettered in gilt on spines and decorated in blind on the covers in the style of Ticknor format A, and with white wove endpapers coated brown. xi, 283, 16 ads; 288, 16 add pp. A very good set, quite near to fine for American books of this period. The textblock is solid and for the most part very clean, a small droplet has left an unobtrusive faint mark to the upper margin of the first 8 leaves of Vol. I, otherwise the volumes are quite clean and fresh, Vol. II especially so. A VERY EARLY PRINTING AND IN VERY NICE CONDITION. Italy was the site of this, one of Hawthorne’s most popular books. Of it, the writer said, "No author, without a trial, can conceive of the difficulty of writing a romance about a country where there is no shadow, no antiquity, no mystery, no picturesque and gloomy wrong, nor anything but a commonplace prosperity, in broad and simple daylight, as is happily the case with my dear native land. It will be very long, I trust, before romance-writers may find congenial and easily handled themes, either in the annals of our stalwart republic, or in any characteristic and probable events of our individual lives. Romance and poetry, ivy, lichens, and wall-flowers need ruin to make them grow." John Lothrop Motley wrote to Hawthorne that " I like those shadowy, weird, fantastic, Hawthornesque shapes flitting through the golden gloom which is the atmosphere of the book. I like the misty way in which the story is indicated rather than revealed. The outlines are quite definite enough, from the beginning to the end, to those who have imagination enough to follow you in your airy flights; and to those who complain, I suppose nothing less than an illustrated edition with a large gallows on the last page, with Donatello in the most pensive of attitudes, his ears revealed at last through a white nightcap, would be satisfactory." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called it a "wonderful book" and William Dean Howells wrote that it would ".[yield] him that full honor and praise which a writer can hope for but once in his life."
