With author portrait and 50 photogravures of works of art and places in Rome significant in the novel, each with tissue guard. The binding, designed by Sarah Wyman Whitman, is red cloth, gilt, backed in faux vellum, also gilt. T.e.g. A near fine copy, with very faint foxing to spine, and light toning to endpapers.

Description: A very good copy of the Riverside Press numbered hard cover edition (this set is number 140 of 150 printed), lacking dust-jackets, probably as issued. The text of each volume is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the decorative cloth bindings are still rather bright and fresh in appearance, with a bit of age-toning and some wear to the spines, the lettering of which has been largely worn away. There is a 1/2" tear/split of the binding cloth at the crown of the front spine seam (not visible in the front gutter). A sharp set.
