Page number: 97. Hardcover. Sage green boards with gilt lettering to the spine and an image of a phoenix embossed on the front. Gilt top edge. Deckle edged pages. Hand made paper. Condition. Very Good. the boards are only slightly worn and slightly marked. The edges and spine are slightly faded. The endpapers are uniformly tanned but the other pages are clean and fresh having the appearance of being unread. There is no jacket. an elegant book.

Light discolouration to edges and fading at spine. Light foxing to endpapers. Top edge of text block gilt, remaining outer edges untrimmed. Clean, tight text block. In dust jacket, Lightly rubbed. Jacket is worn at the top edge slightly and is chipped and torn at the top of spine (with a 2.25 inch tear and a 1 inch chip) and slightly less so on the top right corner. A lovely copy. very good C.f Roberts A50. This is the American edition of 'The Escaped Cock'. This revised title for Lawrence's last work of fiction is fitting for the ironic timing and also as a testament to the spiritual connections of the story as opposed to just the graphic sexuality of the narrative (which aroused fierce critism)

This work was originally titled THE ESCAPED COCK and was published in Paris by the Black Sun Press in 1929, Lawrence decided upon this new title shortly before his death. The text of the two is substantially similar but some technical differences were made. The Secker printing is quite attractive, essentially as a fine press work of the period, limited and on especially nice paper.
