Price: US$1850.00 + shipping

Description: Full Description: HAMMETT, Dashiell. The Maltese Falcon. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First edition. Octavo (7 7/16 x 5 1/8 inches; 188 x 131 mm). [4, blank], [8], 267, [1], [4, blank] pp. Original light gray cloth decoratively stamped in dark grayish blue and black on front cover and spine. Front cover stamped with a falcon. Top edge stained dark blue, others uncut. Spine a bit sunned. With a portion of the front flap of the first issue dust jacket neatly affixed to front pastedown. A very good or better copy without any wear. The Maltese Falcon was "one of the first examples of hard-boiled fiction, and it marked the first appearance of Hammett's famous private eye, Sam Spade. Dealing with the theft of a jewel-encrusted falcon, which originally belonged to the Knights Templars, the story was as romantic in content as it was realistic and tough in manner. It was filmed three times, and in the version by John Huston (1941), the story became one of the great examples of Film Noir" (Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia). The Maltese Falcon was first published in five parts in Black Mask between September 1929 and January 1930. Layman A3.1.a. HBS 68970. $1,850.

DASHIELL HAMMETT.. The Maltese Falcon. A novel.. Alfred A.Knopf, London and New York, 1930.

Price: US$1921.30 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The first UK edition (first printing), issued five months after the US edition. 8vo. 280pp. Blue smooth-weave cloth lettered in red at the spine with a small black-stamped falcon design to the backstrip and to the upper corner of the front board. Publisher's blue top edge stain, very slightly patchy. Just a trace of light bruising to the spine ends and a touch of very light spotting to the fore edge, with a little further spotting to the half-title, title page, and one or two further preliminary and concluding leaves. Free endpapers lightly browned and a tiny bump to the tips of the two lower corners. A touch of very light soiling to occasional leaf margins and, once or twice, to the text block. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. The first and only full-length novel featuring Hammett's celebrated gumshoe Sam Spade. The print runs of the first US and first UK editions are unknown, but considering the relative availability of the first American edition, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition must surely have been printed in considerably smaller numbers. Hammett, Dashiell. The Maltese Falcon. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1930.

Price: US$2950.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A solid Nearly Fine copy of Hammett's masterpiece, lacking the original dust jacket. Spine just minutely toned, otherwise very bright and fresh. Hammett's classic hard-boiled detective tale, which would go on to influence countless others in the genre. The story features the first appearance of Sam Spade - a character Hammett referred to as a man with "no original" - and was initially serialized in the classic pulp magazine Black Mask before it was published in book form. Hammett was inspired by his own work as a detective, which is thought to have contributed to Hammett's lauded realism. Famed mystery author, Raymond Chandler, said of the work: "If you can show me 20 books written approximately 20 years back that have as much guts and life now, I'll eat them between slices of Edmund Wilson's head." The Maltese Falcon also inspired numerous films, including the 1941 noir classic of the same name, (which Variety called "one of the best examples of actionful and suspenseful melodramatic story telling in cinematic form") written and directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. The film would be nominated for three Academy Awards - including Best Picture - and was chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. The novel appears on Modern Library's list of the 100 best English Language Novels of the 20th century. Near Fine.

Near fine in a very good second state dust jacket with professional restoration. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Originally serialized in Black Mask Magazine in 1929, Dashiell Hammet's The Maltese Falcon is considered to be the first hard-boiled detective novel and the progenitor of the genre. Hammett, Dashiell. The Maltese Falcon. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930.

Price: US$60000.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition, first printing. Bound in the publisher's gray cloth, with falcon illustration stamped in steel blue to front board, spine decorations and lettering stamped in steel blue and black, black top stain. Original illustrated dust jacket with the iconic image of the falcon to the front panel and spine. Very good or better with light dampstaining to front cover and few minor spots; in the original unclipped (priced $2.00) dust jacket with extensive restoration to spine and along edges, folds professionally reinforced to verso. The Maltese Falcon is the author's third novel and the only book to feature the fictional private detective Sam Spade. Originally published in five installments in the pulp magazine Black Mask from September 1929 - January 1930, The Maltese Falcon marks a departure from Hammett's protagonist The Continental Op, who starred in his first two novels. Sam Spade is a conglomeration of Hammett's earlier detective figures, defined by his attention to detail, somewhat standoffish demeanor, and ruthless dedication to justice. Interestingly, although he only appeared in this novel and a few of Hammett's short stories, Sam Spade is considered the archetypal hard-boiled detective character and is specifically credited as an inspiration for Raymond Chandler's notable character, Detective Philip Marlowe. The Maltese Falcon is a wonderfully complicated murder mystery that keeps the reader guessing until the very end. It was adapted into the 1941 classic film noir starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
