Baum, L. Frank. THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ. , 1919.

Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Description: Oz. (Neill, John R.) illust. THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ by L. Frank Baum. Reilly & Lee, Chicago, 1919 or 1920. 8vo., light tan cloth stamped in red and black, Woozy in red & black on spine, pictorial endpapers, color illustrations in text throughout, advertisments on half-title through Magic of OZ, five advertisments following page 343. Fine throughout, a very attractive copy. VG Hanff, Greene, page 63ff., considers the tan cloth to a be the secondary binding of the Reilly & Britton first edition, and describes early Reilly & Lee printings as being in this binding, and as being otherwise nearly identical to the secondary issues of the first edition. The fact that this copy has advertisements on the half-title though Magic of OZ, implies the 1919-1920 date, making it the earliest reprint. "Magic of Oz" 1919, was the first Oz book published under the Reilly and Lee imprint, and "Glinda of OZ" was the next, in 1920. The fact that Magic is the last in the list of advertized books, dates it as being issued prior to the publication of Glinda. The binding, however, tan, colored in red and black, varies from the secondary first edition binding which was tan, colored in red, green and yellow. Nevertheless, I base the dating on the publisher's usual practice of adding the newly published books to the list of advertisements on the half-title. Patchwork Girl, unlike most of the Oz books had no inserted color plates in any of the editions.
