Trollope, Anthony. The Macdermots of Ballycloran. Chapman & Hall, London, 1861.

Price: US$383.37 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 1861. New edition (second edition - first one volume edition) iv, 364pp. plus a 32 page publisher's catalogue dated January 1861). The Macdermots of Ballycloran was Trollope's first published novel, which he began in September 1843 and completed by June 1845. However, it was not published until 1847 and was initially not a great success with the public. It tells of the tragic demise of a small Catholic landowning family in the Protestant-dominated Ireland of the mid nineteenth century, and focuses on the struggle of Thady Macdermot to keep his sinking property afloat. The book is bound in the original grey-brown cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board with red and black designs around the edges of both boards. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the spine and boards. The titling and designs on the spine and front board are worn. The corners are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the spine ends with damage and loss of about 1/4" to the cloth at both spine ends. The cloth on the top 5 1/4" of the rear spine edge is split and at the bottom of the split there is a tear across about 2/3 of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and there is some browning and a little light foxing on the endpapers. There is a bookseller's blind stamp on the front and rear free endpapers and a 4 page subscription library catalogue has been tipped in on the front free endpaper. There is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper together with faint traces of a small removed label of some sort.

Inner hinges intact and tight, text block fine. The three-volume first edition of Trollope's first novel THE MACDERMOTS OF BALLYCLORAN (Newby, 1847) is one of the great rarities of Victorian Fiction, we've never seen a copy either in original cloth or rebound. TROLLOPE, Anthony.. The Macdermots of Ballycloran. New (i.e. Second) edn.. Chapman & Hall. 1861, 1861.

Price: US$929.18 + shipping

Description: Orig. glazed buff linen, blocked & lettered in black & red; a little browned & sl. rubbed, but overall a good-plus copy. See Trollope Society Catalogue 1; See Sadleir 1. The Second Edition, and first one-volume edition, of Trollope's first novel. The first edition, published by Thomas Newby in three volumes in 1847, is exceptionally scarce; only four copies appear on ABPC since 1977. Sadleir suggests that the first one-volume edition appeared 'late in 1859 or early in 1860', but no copies bearing this dated appear on Copac or ABPC, and it is generally accepted that this 1861 edition is the true second edition. The novel is set in Ireland, against a backdrop of poverty and civil unrest in the years immediately preceding the Potato Famine.
