Condition: Very Good

Description: First Edition. 8vo. (xxiii), 388 pages- including the index. Tom Lea (illustrator). There is a color illustration on frontis page extending to top half of the title page. On the inside of the front cover the previous owner wrote who he was, where he lived and a comment regarding a special edition (not this one) was done in leather. Despite his notes, this is a very nice copy. Dobie wrote page xiii: "The Texas Longhorn made more history than any other breed of cattle the civilized world has known. As an animal in the realm of natural history, he was the peer of bison or grizzly bear. As a social factor, his influence on men was extraordinary. An economic agent in determining the character and occupation of a territory continental in its vastness, he moved elementally with drouth, grass, blizzards out of the Arctic and the wind from the south. However supplanted or however disparaged by evolving standards and generations, he will remain the bedrock on which the history of the cow country of America is founded." Dobie himself described the book thus: 'History of the longhorn breed, psychology of stampedes; days of maverickers and mavericks; stories of individual lead steers and outlaws of the range; stories about rawhide and many other subjects. The book attempts to reveal the blend made by man, beast, and range.' 'One of the true classics of range cattle literature.' (Reese Six-Score 32. Howes D375. Rampaging Herd 694).

Description: First Trade Edition. 8vo. Decorated cloth, xxiii [1], 388 pp., introduction, illustrated, notes, index. Numerous illustrations by Tom Lea. Dobie, "tells of the Spanish conquistadors, who brought their cattle with them; of ranching in the turbulent colonial times; of the cowboy, whose abandon, energy, insolence, and pride epitomized the booming West. He writes of terrifying stampedes, titanic bull fights on the range, ghost steers, and encounters with Indians." "Dobie's book not only gives a history of cattle introduction into the western hemisphere but the history of cattle drives, the nature of the beast that made the longhorn so popular. He does this through gathered anecdotal information in the cowboys' and cattlemen's own language. The book is replete with terms, slang, uses of longhorn 'parts,' connections with Native Americans, comparisons of traits of longhorns and buffalo, as well as more 'modern" cattle.'"
