ARDIZZONE, Edward (illustrator).. The Local.. , 1939.

Price: US$215.72 + shipping

Description: [Cassell & Co. Ltd. La Belle Sauvage, 1939]. An original lithograph in colours, title-legend by Ardizzone in the plate, image size circa 14 x 21cm, professionally mounted in a hand-cut acid-free ivory-coloured mount (circa 28 x 41cm) and presented in a smark unvarnished oak frame. From one of Edward Ardizzone's earliest works, "The Local", published in 1939, with text by Maurice Gorham who was a childhood friend of the artist. The image is of "The Warwick Castle", 6 Warwick Plate, Maida Vale, London. This is the first of their joint investigations in printed form into pubs and popular goings-on which arose from their enjoyment of the conviviality of pub life. Gorham noted that the unsold copies of the book together with the unbound sheet and plates "went up together in the burning of Cassell's premises in Belle Sauvage Yard". The plates were printed at the the Curwen Press.

Condition: Very Good

Description: The First UK printing published by Cassell, London in 1939. The BOOK is in Very Good ++ condition. Original two-colour printed paper boards are lightly marked. The spine is missing as invariably is the case with this title due to the restrictions on quality of war time production. The boards are however firmly attached and the book is tight. Free from inscriptions and the pages are clean. Frontispiece, title-page, xvi ~+ 51 pages, with all 14 other illustrations (including one double-page spread) in very good condition. The text, together with the 'Glossary of Terms' commonly used in connection with the London Pubs, remain a wonderful insight and are added to by the wonderful Ardizzone lithos. Grey paper-covered boards, titled in red and black on the front, and with a pen drawing (a version of the lithograph on p.8) lettered by the artist. Front endpaper slightly freckled. A couple of very slight chips to spine almost without loss. A very good bright copy. This, the first of Ardizzone's homages to the English pub, was printed by the Curwen Press and can be seen as a companion to Eric Ravilious's 'High Street' , though I think it better. It was issued without a dust-jacket. ARDIZZONE, Edward (illustrates). GORHAM, Maurice.. The Local.. Cassell, London., 1939.

Price: US$1007.15 + shipping

Description: First edition. Royal octavo. 50 pages. 14 full-page colour lithographs, 1 double-page colour lithograph and cover design by Edward Ardizzone. The first 8 lithographs are tipped-in, the remainder being on cognate leaves. All the lithographs have captions in cursive script by Edward Ardizzone. Pictorial boards. Printed at the Curwen Press. According to Alderson, the unsold stock was destroyed when Cassell's premises in Belle Sauvage Yard were burnt to the ground.Head and tail of spine scuffed. Corners of covers a bit rubbed. Very good in the remains of the cellophane dustwrapper but with the printed paper flaps present. These are crinkled, as seems to be a common problem with these ''transmatic'' dustwrapper. It is sometimes stated that the book was issued without a dustwrapper, which goes to show how seldom it is present.

Description: First edition. Royal octavo (23.5 x 15.5cm). 'The preparation and printing of the lithographs was one instance of E.A.'s happy and fruitful collaborative work with the Curwen Press. With a frontis & 14 further coloured lithographs by Ardizonne, one of which double-page. Presentation copy from Oliver Simon of the Curwen Press, who printed the volume, to another of the Curwen's employees, John Cooper, dated November 1939, with Cooper's bookplate. Endpapers partially tanned. Bookplate of Andrew Murray on the flyleaf. The glue fixing the paper flaps to the glacine jacket has shrunk causing a concertina effect. By the time it appeared the war had begun, and the book's career ended when unsold copies, sheets, and plates of the drawings went up together in the burning of Cassells' premises in Belle Sauvage Yard." From the Foreword by Maurice Gorham to 'Back to the Local' (1949). 'The Local' bears comparison with 'High Street' in its colourful celebration of an aspect of English social life and is just as hard to find in really good condition. The book's scarcity is explained by Maurice Gorham in his Foreword to their follow-up book Back to the Local (1949): "[The Local's] career ended when unsold copies, sheets, and plates of the drawings went up together in the burning of Cassells' premises in Belle Sauvage Yard [during the Blitz]".
