COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor.. THE LITERARY REMAINS OF SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE collected and edited by Henry Nelson Coleridge.. London William Pickering, 1836.

Price: US$320.22 + shipping

Description: Four volumes, 8vo, pp. xix, [i], [ii] corrigenda slip, 395; viii, 416; xvi, 422; [viii], 438; with an eight-page advertisement catalogue at the front of volume IV; a very good copy in the original dark green pebble-grain cloth, printed paper labels (a little chipped and darkened). First edition of this collection, made by Coleridge's nephew (and son-in-law) Henry Nelson Coleridge (1798-1843), the son of his elder brother James. This was part of a major work undertaken by Henry and his wife Sara (the poet's daughter) after Coleridge's death, to combat what seemed to be his reputation as a sad failure. Although Henry's name alone is on the title page here, he was in fact greatly assisted by Sara, and she continued the work after his early death in 1843. Provenance. Inscription in all four volumes: 'Gandy J, Heaves, 1841'. This odd inscription actually makes sense when one realises that it must be James Gandy (1787-1859), the wealthy owner of a woollen mill at Kendal, and chairman of the Bank of Westmorland (founded 1833). He and his family lived at Heaves, a village a few miles south of Kendal. Gandy would presumably never have encountered Coleridge personally but, as a considerable figure in the Lake District economy, he could well have met Wordsworth and Southey.
