Adapted to both stage and screen, most recently in 2005, which (similar to the Tolkien movies) brought a fresh audience to Lewis and the land of Narnia. Loved by many, the book "was ranked ninth on the BBC's The Big Read poll.Time magazine included the novel in its list of the 100 Best Young-Adult Books of All Time, as well as its list of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923" (n.b., quote per Wiki). This the first printing (stated on the copyright page) of the first US edition, which was published the same year as the true (British) first edition (Geoffrey Bles), with the same cover illustration by Pauline Baynes. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full blue cloth over boards, vignette stamped in yellow and dark blue onto the front board of a deer leaping through some trees, dark blue lettering stamped onto the spine with the title over a yellow rectangular "label", title page vignette, black-and-white illustrations throughout, both full-page and in-text; octavo size (8 1/4" by 5 1/2"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-154. In the original dust jacket of blue with a vignette on a white ground on the front panel in green, black, and tan, blue lettering above and below, blue lettering on the spine, summary of book on the front flap with the printed price of $2.50 at the bottom (top corner clipped), one of the illustrations (the children having tea with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver) on the back panel with a quote below. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a hint of sunning along the top and bottom edges of the boards and light residue (glue) along the joints, else fine. Each are in fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An exceptional set. The Chronicles of Narnia is "unforgettable not only for the excitement and suspense of the adventures but also for the strong emotions they describe so well [and they are] further enriched by Lewis' skillful use of language" (Silvey, 406). "Each book has something new and different to offer and there is no weakening of either inspiration or interest" (Eyre, 132). It is interesting that Lewis' inspiration came from a dream: "At first I had very little idea how the story would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. I think I had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time. [O]nce he was there, he pulled the whole story together, and soon he pulled the six other Narnian stories in after him (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature, 1980). Lewis was "concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction to re-imagine the story in an exciting narrative context. [The Narnia books are] intoxicating to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative of readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th-century author" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 370). “Adored by children and academics alike, these books are extremely collectable, sought-after, and scarce” (Connolly, 186).

Price: US$29000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: BRITISH FIRST EDITION. 7 VOLUME COMPLETE SET IN DUST WRAPPERS. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.  According to a list on Wikipedia, the first Narnia book, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, is the seventh best selling book in history. All books in this set are first editions and first printings. The books and dust wrappers are at least very good. Please see details below. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1950. Light discoloration on boards and spine. An owner's printed book plate inside the front cover. No other writing in the book. The dust wrapper is not price clipped and has just a modest amount of edge wear along the top. Very nice copy.Prince Caspian. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1951.  The book is near fine with a touch of foxing on one end sheet but virtually no wear. No writing or ownership marks in the book. The dust wrapper is not price clipped and in VG condition with some edge wear. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1952.  Book and dust wrapper are VG. The second blank leaf of the book has a large high school price label adhered to the page. The label has writing but there is no other writing. The unclipped dust wrapper has light soiling on the back and some edge wear at the spine and back. Quite a nice wrapper. The Silver Chair. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1953.  Because this is often the toughest Narnia book to find, it is frequently in lesser condition when found in sets. But this copy is marvelous. The book is near fine with very little wear and a tight binding.  The first front end paper has a bit of browning from acidic paper. The dust wrapper is not price clipped and has a slightly faded spine. The Horse and His Boy. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1954. The half title page has a gift inscription.  First front end paper has some browning from acidic paper. The dust wrapper is not price clipped. Its condition is very nice with just some edge wear at the top.The Magician's Nephew. London: The Bodley Head, 1955. The book is in marvelous condition but there is a gift inscription on the first front end paper. The dust wrapper is price clipped and has browning on the spine and back. A closed tear of 3/4" on the top.The Last Battle. London: The Bodley Head, 1956.  The book is nearly fine with just a faint smudge on the fore edge. The dust wrapper is not price clipped and has almost no wear. The back of the wrapper is lightly soiled. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe are the only two first edition books which possess frontispieces in color. They were printed separately and inserted and therefore they are usually on paper which is whiter than the paper of the text. One would be hard pressed to find a nicer set of these classic children's stories from C. S. Lewis. Shelley and Son Books specializes in C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien & the Inklings. Full refund if not satisfied.
