Early impressions of these Macmillan editions.Two volume set in the original cloth binding.This is a wonderful collection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, published between 1891 and 1898 by Macmillan and Co. This set contains 'Plain Tales from the Hills' as well as 'Soldiers Three, The Story of the Gadsbys, and In Black and White'.This is the third edition of 'Plain Tales from the Hills' (1891), containing a selection of short stories that appeared in the 'Civil and Military Gazette' between 1885 and 1887. This was Kipling's first collection of prose, containing stories with a 'deceptively simple narrative style'. Most of the stories are set in the Hill Station of Simla, and contains works such as 'Lispeth','Thrown Away', 'Miss Youghal's Sais', and 'Cupid's Arrows'.This is the third impression of 'Soldiers Three, The Story of the Gadsbys, and In Black and White' (1898), which contains three other collections of short stories by Kipling. These works were all published in 1888, and contains an assortment of characters including three soldiers named Learoyd, Mulvaney, and Otheris, as well as various Indian characters. These short stories were originally published in booklet form by A H Wheeler & Co's Indian Railway Library.Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, and poet who is particularly known for 'The Jungle Book'. He was born in British India, which inspired much of his literary works throughout his life.With six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of 'Soldiers Three', and forty-one pages of adverts to the rear of 'Plain Tales'.Collated, complete. Front endpaper to 'Soldiers Three' has been neatly excised from text. Internally, firmly bound. Binding is loosening towards the middle of 'Plain Tales'. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old, The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical; being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. Most of the novel is set in London, but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan and Port Said. It follows the life of Dick Heldar, an artist and painter who goes blind, and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate, Maisie. Though it was poorly received by critics, the novel has remained in print for over a century. It was also adapted into a play, two silent films as well as a drama film.
