A good copy in full 19th-century brown polished calf, spine with raised bands, gilt floral tooling, and contrasting black and brown morocco labels, covers bordered with twin gilt rules and rosettes at corners, gilt inner dentelles, marbled edges and endpapers (front cover detached, lacks lower third of spine; some wear). Text and plates nice, sewing firm. First printing of the Stothard illustrations.

Vol 2, front hinge cracked with front board and prelims only very loosely attached to main text block with fragile thread. Spines slightly cocked and faded. Scattered foxing, but text mostly clean. Description: Complete suite of 22 proofs before titles, including 2 vignettes for the 1820 edition of Defoe's Life and adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Engraved by Charles Heath the elder (1785 - 1848) on India paper (mounted) after the original drawings by Thomas Stothard (1755 - 1834). Loose within folder consisting of drab boards, paper label and blue leather spine. 2 small holes to fore edge suggestive of ribbon ties. 'Drawn by T. Stothard R.A. Published Feby 1st. 1820. by Cadell & Davies Strand London. Engraved by E. Heath.' Sizes: Folder 31 x 46.5cm, prints 44 x 30cm, images 9.5 x12.5cm. Condition: Spine gone, boards discoloured and worn. Prints foxed, particularly the margins, less so within plate mark and only a few images being lightly affected. Creasing and wear to periphery of prints including a few small nicks & tears with larger creases, tears & watermarks to a few. Few small pieces missing from corners and fore-edges here & there. A very rare collection.

In overall good used condition with some minor signs of age, handling and storage - boards rubbed and scuffed to edges. Bindings tight and appear little read. Internally clean, no annotation or inscriptions - contemporary bookplate to front pastedown in each volume; toning to page-ends and some light scattered foxing here and there but text and illustrations bright and clear throughout. Robinson Crusoe is presented to the reader as an autobiography of Robinson, a castaway who spends thirty years on a remote tropical island. The works discusses his encounters with cannibals, captives and mutineers. With gilted edges and decorative gilt stamping to boards. Illustrated throughout, with nine plates to volume II and eleven plates to volume I. With vingette title pages to both volumes. Collated, complete. Notable for the illustrations by famous illustrator and engraver, Thomas Stothard. Stothard illustrated many popular and important works including The Pilgrim's Progress, The Rape of the Lock and The Decameron. This is Daniel Defoe's most famous novel and was first published in 1719. Defoe is known as being one of the earliest proponents of the novel as he helped to popularise the form. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines and board edges. Externally, generally smart with areas of minor rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small areas of rubbing to the head and tail of spines. Cockling to endpapers due to adhesive. Some damage to the front pastedown of volume I due to worming. Prior owner's bookplate to verso of front endpapers, William Botfield. Minor holes to bookplate and front endpaper to both volumes. Front hinges are slightly strained but firm. Internally, both volumes are generally firmly bound. First few pages to volume II are slightly strained but firm. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spots throughout. Very Good Indeed
