Description: Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord during the years 1846-1849, just about the time he was completing David Copperfield. In this charming, simple retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke, Dickens hoped to teach his young children about religion and faith. He wrote it by hand, exclusively for their eyes alone. He strongly expressed his desire that the manuscript remain in the family and he would not have it published in his lifetime. After, his death, he requested it not be published during the lifetimes of his children. For 85 years, his family followed his wishes. When his youngest son, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, died in 1933, he did not impose any restriction on the publication of the manuscript, except that proceeds from publication be shared among the family. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812?1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. To have a new publication 85 years after his death made for a remarkable 1st edition. Book designed by Ernst Reichl. Hardcover has green cloth boards, gold lettering and designs on front and spine, but no dust jacket. Spine has brown shadowbox and front cover displays a faux Charles Dickens' signature. A piece of the spine has torn/worn away at head. Page-edges tinted black. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Seldom, if ever, read. No marks of any kind. Copyright 1934. Stated First Edition with 1934 date on title page. True 1st implied. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.

Description: Nice condition copy of "The Life of Our Lord" by CHARLES DICKENS with its original dust jacket. (The jacket is un-clipped with the original $1.75 price intact on the back flap.) 1934 1st edition (stated); Simon and Schuster; New York. With a facsimile of the first page of the original manuscript, decorative end papers, black stained page edges on all sides, and a frontispiece portrait of Dickens. From the dust jacket: "Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord for his own children. He set it down in his own hand, for their eyes - and their eyes alone - during the years from 1846 to 1849, at about the time he was completing David Copperfield. When The Life of Our Lord was finished, Dickens had eight children, the oldest, Charles Jr., having been born in 1837, and the youngest, Henry Fielding, in January 1849, Sydney was two years old, but the others, ranging from twelve to four, were definitely in the articulate and inquisitive age, and to answer their questions about religion and faith, he decided to set down this simple narrative of the life of Christ. For eighty-five years the resulting manuscript was sacredly guarded as a precious family secret. After his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth, died, it fell to Dickens' youngest child, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, with the admonition that it should not be published while any child of Dickens lived. Just before the 1933 Christmas holidays Sir Henry died in London. Sir Henry's widow and children, through a majority decision, assumed the right to permit its publication, and The Life of Our Lord, by Charles Dickens is thus given to the world." Description: 8 ½ X 11 thick card covers with cloth-covered spine, string-bound. 80 leaves, 75 numbered pages, rectos only, beginning about ten pages into the scrapbook. Newspaper clippings pasted on both rectos and versos through page 30 and rectos only thereafter through page 74. Page 75 is blank. Two 1936 clippings from the Sunday New York Herald Tribune Books section are laid in between blank leaves near the end of the scrapbook, as are pressed flowers between preceding leaves. A number of the articles are serial installments, some are book reviews. Miss Trosper (1912-1944), daughter of an Oklahoma pioneering family, attended the University of Oklahoma and appears to have been a recent graduate living in New York at the time she assembled this scrapbook. She noted on her bookplate (1934 / New York), indicating she spent at least part of the year in New York collecting articles from New York newspapers, January through May of 1934. Two from that time range were collected from the Sunday World Herald of Omaha, Nebraska. Outside that date range are two 1936 articles from the New York Herald Tribune, Sunday Books section laid in near the end of the scrapbook. The scrapbook begins with reviews of the first publication of Dickens' "The Life of Our Lord," (Simon & Schuster, 1934), written for his children during the years 1846 to 1949, followed by a few pages of headlines and images referring to the end of his marriage. After these introductory nine page, Miss Trosper started numbering the pages in the upper corners (rectos only) 1, 2, 3, etc. Page 1 contains the first installment of a series of love letters Dickens wrote to his boyhood sweetheart, Maria Beadknell, who eventually broke up with him. The serialized articles introduced by by H.H. Harper begin Sunday, April 22, 1934, (the page numbered 1 in the scrapbook) and conclude Sunday, May 6, 1934. The installments are interspersed with other articles until page 26, from where they are presented sequentially through page 71. Shelf and corner wear, moisture staining evident along the lower front-cover at the spine. Bookplate of compiler, Elizabeth Jane Trosper, affixed inside the front cover, her name written above it, as well as on the bookplate with the year (1934) and place (New York). Interior pages in very good condition and the newspaper clippings have browned, but still firmly pasted to the leaves.

Description: [Written Expressly for His Children and Never to be Published] - [His Family Did Publish This Book & It Was the Last Work of Charles Dickens Ever To Be Published] - Lady Dickens is reported to have said about this publication: This book, the last work of Charles Dickens to be published, has an individual interest and purpose that separate it completely from everything else that Dickens wrote. Quite apart from its Divine Subject, the manuscript is peculiarly personal to the novelist, and is not so much a revelation of his mind as a tribute to his heart and humanity, and also, of course, his deep devotion to Our Lord. It was written in 1849, twenty-one years before his death, expressly for his children. The simple manuscript is entirely handwritten and is in no sense a fair copy but a spontaneous draft. In order to preserve its personality, the manuscript has been followed faithfully in every detail. This accounts for the varying use of capital letters, and other peculiarities. Charles Dickens frequently told his children the Gospel Story, and made mention of the Divine Example in his letters to them. This Life of Our Lord was written without thought of publication, in order that his family might have a permanent record of their fathers thoughts. After his death, this manuscript remained in the possession of his sister-in law, Miss Georgina Hogarth. On her death in 1917 it came into the possession of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens. Charles Dickens had made it clear that he had written 'The Life of Our Lord' in a form which he thought best suited to his children, and not for publication. His son, Sir Henry, was averse to publishing the work in his own lifetime, but saw no reason why publication should be withheld after his death. Sir Henrys Will provided that, if the majority of his family were in favour of publication, 'The Life of Our Lord' should be given to the world. It was first published, in serial form, in March 1934. - Marie Dickens - April 1934 - CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket houses this book. Browned round the edges. There were a lot of chips and closed edge tears along the top edge of the front panel and these have been repaired with colour like paper to the rear. It is now housed in a removable plastic sleeve for future protection. - Green cloth boards, with the title of the book and the author's name on the front board in gold leaf. Fading to the colour around the extremities. Very good clean condition. - Front and rear beautifully decorated endpages are in a beautiful clean condition as are the rest of the pages. There is also a 'facsimile of the first page of the manuscript of this book in Charles Dickens' own handwriting. It's nice to see. - E N D - Thanks for looking and hope you want to buy. - Rapid dispatch [same day if possible, or as soon as].
