Description: 8vo., (7 4/8 x 5 inches). 7-page publishers catalogue at end. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Fremont, and 7 engraved plates (one or two stains). Original publishers purple cloth (unevenly faded to brown, scuffed at the extremities). Provenance: with the early ownership inscription of H.H. Morgan of Lyndon on the front free endpaper. First edition of one of a number of campaign publications issued when Fremont reentered politics in 1856. "Mr. Smucker's memoir . forms pp.5-72. The rest of the book is a reprint of A report on an exploration. between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains, 1843" (Sabin 85161). "With crucial early support from Nathaniel Banks and Francis Blair, Sr. (1791-1876), he became the first presidential candidate of the newly formed Republican party on a platform opposing the extension of slavery. Chosen more for his heroic image than his political skills, he nonetheless inspired great enthusiasm in the North, while in the South he was branded a "Frenchman's bastard" and, incorrectly, a secret Roman Catholic. Although Frémont gained the majority of northern votes, he was defeated nationwide by the Democratic candidate, James Buchanan (1.8 to 1.34 million, with an electoral vote of 174 to 114). Despite the loss, his candidacy established the Republican party's dominance in the North and set the stage for Abraham Lincoln's victory in 1860" (Pamela Herr for ANB).

Old dampstin affecting lower corner of frontis, but not title-page. With all faults, a very good, well preserved copy with clean interior, supple pages and strong hinges.
