Robert Louis Stevenson. Virginibus Puerisque and Other Papers. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1899.

Price: US$40.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A very good plus copy in the original brown cloth binding. The binding is clean and undamaged, with unbumped edges and corners. Overall square and sound with uncracked hinges. Inside, there is a neatly inked gift inscription dated January 1900 (amusingly, the donor has started to write 1800, but has then corrected herself - plus ça change), but other than that there are no other markings of any kind. The text block is clean, bright, and undamaged. "Virginibus Puerisque (1881) was the first collection of Stevenson's essays. Containing what would have been regarded as personal essays in the tradition of Lamb and Hazlitt, the volume brought together essays previously published in the prestigious Cornhill Magazine ("Walking Tours" and "Virginibus Puerisque" [1876]; "On Falling in Love" and "Apology for Idlers" [1877]; "Crabbed Age and Youth", "Aes Triplex", "English Admirals" and "Child's Play" (1878); "Truth of Intercourse" [1879]) as well as essays printed in Macmillan's ("Ordered South" [1874]) and London ("A Plea for Gas Lamps", "Pan's Pipes" and "El Dorado" [1878]), and the previously unpublished "Some Portraits by Raeburn" and the second part of "Virginibus Puerisque". The essays promote a spirit of playfulness in defiance of both the hardships of human life and the restrictions imposed by bourgeois Philistinism. The volume did not sell well but had a good critical reception, confirming the author of Inland Voyage (1878) and Travels with a Donkey (1879) as one of the rising stars on the literary scene, notable for his youthful high spirits and elegant, if sometimes too showy, literary style".

Lamb, Charles. The Life and Work of Charles Lamb. Twelve volumes complete.. Macmillan 1899 - 1900, London, 1899.

Price: US$27360.00 + shipping

Description: One of an edition of 675 copies. Livingston notes that "Alfred Ainger's edition is valuable chiefly for the admirably edited Letters . which have never been superseded." The publication of this edition saw "further considerable additions" to the letters. This set has been bound by Birdsall in red morocco, gilt, and the front cover of each volume features a scene depicted in multicolored leather onlays measuring a generous 3 x 5 inches set within a single gilt frame. Meticulously executed, and showing a remarkable attention to detail, these bindings clearly reflect the period generally considered Birdsall's heyday, which was contemporary with the publication of this edition. This is a fine set, with each volume housed in a fleece-lined cloth slipcase. (Livingston, Appendix II, p. 278)
