Lengthy inscription to Sir Joseph Fayrer F.R.S. to endpaper of Vol. I, 'from his very old friends at Oakfield Lodge . Denmark Hill, 23rd January, 1888'. Sir Joseph Fayrer (1824-1907) was a British physician who served as Surgeon General in India. He is noted for his writings on medicine, work on public health, including the official investigation on cholera, and his studies on snakes and the treatment of snakebite, in India, including his classic, Thanatophidia of India. Being a Description of the Venomous Snakes of the Indian Peninsula, with an Account of the Influence of Their Poison on Life, 1874. Fifth thousand revised, with errata corrected (second issue of the first edition, published in the same year as the first). Complete in 3 volumes. Freeman 1453.

Grey cloth boards a little worn and some fading at spine, titles dull, partly unopened and uncut. full octavo (9 x 6 inches) 22.5 x 15 cm. *NOTE: This set has the armorial bookplate to each volume, inside the front boards of; Sir John Tomlinson Brunner, 1st Baronet, DL (1842–1919) was a British chemical industrialist and Liberal Party politician. Went on to create the chemical company Brunner Mond & Co, initially making alkali by the Solvay process. As a Member of Parliament he represented Northwich, Cheshire, in 1885–1886 and then from 1887 to 1910. He was a paternalistic employer and as a politician supported Irish Home Rule, trade unions, free trade, welfare reforms and a generous benefactor to the towns in his constituency and to the University of Liverpool. He is the great grandfather of the Duchess of Kent.
