James Boswell. The Life of Samuel Johnson and Journal of A Tour to the Hebrides. Gabriel Wells by Doubleday Page and Company, New York, 1922.

Price: US$2433.64 + shipping

Description: An attractively-bound copy of Boswell's famous 'Life of Johnson'. With a biographical introduction by Clemence Shorter.Illustrated throughout with fiifty-three plates (collated complete).Bound by Whitman Bennett. Temple Bar edition, limited to seven hundred and eighty-five copies, of which this is number 191.It is regarded as an important stage in the development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English. While Boswell's personal acquaintance with his subject only began in 1763, when Johnson was 54 years old, Boswell covered the entirety of Johnson's life by means of additional research. The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. Regardless of these actions, modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information on Johnson and his times.Complete in ten volumes. In half-morocco bindings. Externally, smart, with just some slight rubbing to the extremities. Volumes 2 and 8 have slight wear to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd spot. Many pages are unopened. Very Good Indeed
