Condition: fair to good (front cover detached and edges scuffed/worn; frontispiece portrait heavily foxed, other printed pages have scattered foxing.). -- This biography was reprinted in modern format on the occasion of Dickens' 200th birthday celebration; Forster knew Dickens as friend, literary advisor and was trusted by Dickens as his will executor and biographer. Our copy has a printed (on verso of dedication page) glowing review by Thomas Carlye (from Letter to the Author, 16 February 1874). -- It is nice to own the original but it does need some restoration.

These sketches were "praised for their humour, wit, touches of pathos, and the 'startling fidelity' of their descriptions of London life" (ODNB). The work was first published in two series from 1836 to 1837. Octavo (212 x 134 mm). Contemporary half calf for James Bell of Nottingham, twin green spine labels, compartments richly decorated in gilt, dark green cloth sides, sides and corners ruled with single gilt fillet and blind dotted roll, marbled endpapers and edges. Description: Three volumes, complete, now bound in 6 volumes. 8vo. This is an Extra Illustrated First Edition. There are 196 extra illlustrations, not including those bound originally in the books. The illustrations follow the life of Dickens, showing locations he visited, the people he encountered, and even some portraits of characters from his novels. Of special note is the inclusion of 5 printed wrapper covers for Pickwick Papers, Nicholas Nickleby, Dombey and Son, Our Mutual Friend and Martin Chuzzlewit. One plate, a large Hogarth facsimile of The Laughing Audience is folded at the hinge and occupies both pages. There is some very minor occasional spotting and offsetting from the plates. Bound now in contemporary red straight-grained morocco by Riviere and Sons. Top edges gilt. All volumes have a gilt floral design to the corners and are lettered in gilt to the spine. John Forster was a friend of Dickens and following Dickens' death received several of his manuscripts. An exceptionally beautiful set, and one of a kind. Near Fine.
