Dickens, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. Chapman and Hall, London, 1844.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition, rebound in clean maroon cloth with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; very bright and fresh; xiii, 624 pages. Lacking a date on the Title Page, Quercus believes this copy was possibly made up of serial parts: the Preface is dated June, 1844. Points noted: there are 38 plates plus the double Title Page by "Phiz" (Halbot Browne); the errata page has 14 lines; the pound-sign is not transposed (although Ahearn gives this no priority). Given these, this would not be the first issue. This is, nonetheless, a very sturdy copy, given the rebind. The front hinge is cracked but holding well, and there is a short tear to the first ten pages, probably from enthusiastic page-turning. . Later Printing. Buckram. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by "Phiz" (Halbot Browne). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Price: US$166.82 + shipping

Description: First edition. 624 pages + frontispiece, vignette title page and all 38 illustrated plates present, though a couple are bound in at the wrong place. With the following issue points: "100£" and 7 studs to the vignette title page and the Errata page listing 10 corrections over 13 lines. The book is quite firmly bound having been recently sympathetically re-spined, retaining the earlier Victorian marbled boards and endpapers, the boards are quite bumped marked and rubbed. The text block is age browned, quite marked and foxed, the plates particularly browned, there are some dog-eared page corners, small chips and short closed tears to some page edges and the plate at page 138 has a longer closed tear which has been stabilised with a small piece of thin paper archival tape to the reverse. There is an ink inscription to the front endpaper indicating that the book once belonged to John Lyon of Liverpool, and the later bookplate of Eric Geoffrey Goldrein (1921-2022) to the front pastedown. The latter a WW2 hero who took part in the Normandy Landings and captured 60 German soldiers while wounded, subsequently conducting a successful career as a barrister and becoming Lord Mayor of Hale during his retirement. A reasonably presentable first edition with some interesting provenance.

Dickens, Charles (Text by); Hablot K. Brown (aka Phiz) (Illustrated by). The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. Chapman and Hall, London, 1844.

Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo (8 3/8 x 5 1/2"). xiv, [2], 624pp. Contemporary 3/4 burgundy calf over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Raised bands. Marbled paper edges. Engraved frontispiece and additional title. Originally serialized between 1842 and 1844, Charles Dickens' "The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit" is considered the last of his picaresque novels. Although Dickens thought it to be his best work, it turned out to be one of his least successful novels. Like nearly all of Charles Dickens' novels, "Martin Chuzzlewit" was released to the public in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilization filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, a friend of Dickens. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with forty steel-engravings including frontispiece and title-page vignette by Hablot K. Brown aka "Phiz." First edition in book form, with the following first state points: Engraved title leaf with "100£" on the sign-post, later corrected to £100; 13-line Errata (page xv), later expanded to 14 lines. For more information, see: Chapter I, page 7 of Walter E. Smith's "Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth: A Bibliographical Catalogue of His Writings in Book Form in England with Facsimiles of the Bindings and Title Pages"). Binding rubbed along edges. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on inside of front cover (Boyd, Alexander), with the motto: "Fidem serva." Heavy foxing to frontispiece and engraved title. Very minor and sporadic light foxing to text pages. The plates have light to moderate foxing which is mainly confined to the blank margins. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in good to very good condition.

Description: ÒThe book shows Dickens at his highest power. Whether it has done much to enforce its intended moral, that selfishness is a bad thing, may be doubted. But the humour and the tragic power are undeniable. Pecksniff and Mrs. Gamp at once became recognised types of character, and the American scenes, revealing DickensÕs real impressions, are perhaps the most surprising proof of his unequalled power of seizing characteristics at a glanceÓ (Leslie Stephen in the D.N.B. article). Octavo. xiv, [2], 624 pp. Forty engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne, including frontispiece and title vignette. Contemporary black calf over marbled boards, gilt spine with burgundy morocco label. Boards and binding extremities a bit rubbed, plates a little brown at edges, but only occasional foxing and offsetting. Old rubberstamp on half-title, ownership signature dated 1874. A good, sound copy. First edition, the issue with the transposed pound sign on the engraved title, which is sometimes considered earlier, but with the second issue fourteen-line errata. Eckel, p. 71. Description: From 1844, a remarkably great fine leather-bound first edition, The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit, as published by Chapman & Hall, London. Beautifully bound in fine full polished calf leather by a top British binder. 9x6 inches, 624 pages. Illustrated with the 39 fine prints by "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne). Near fine condition with a marbled page block. Beautifully gilt decorated on the spine, with a red leather spine label. We note copies of this book listed online at over $2000. Our copy has virtually no wear. A near fine example. Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters.

Half brown morocco and marbled boards, spine titled and decorated in gilt, marbled page edges. xiv, (errata sheet), 624 pp. Illustrated with 40 plates designed & etched on steel by Hablot K. Bright and handsome. Dickens' "adventure" classic and without doubt his most exciting novel, and one he loved well himself, in which the Ironic Wit sets forth a plot now beloved to novelists and moviemakers alike - the rich old dude who doesn't trust any of his money-grubbing kin, and must find a way to select the proper heir. Incomparably complemented by the Phiz illustrations. Handsome and strong copy of a classic, elegantly bound. L-31n

Price: US$825.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, issue with "£100" on the signpost in the engraved frontispiece and the 10 line errata. With frontispiece and 39 engravings after illustrations by 'Phiz'. 8vo, handsomely bound in fine 3/4 green period antique morocco over patterned boards, the spine with raised bands gilt decorated and ruled in blind, lettered in gilt on a red morocco label bordered in gilt, a.e.m. xiv, errata, 624 pp. A handsome and appealing copy in a fine state of preservation. The frontispiece and vignette title-page only lightly mellowed and some plates with a bit of the edge-spotting typically encountered, but a copy very clean and fresh otherwise and generally quite free of the great browning associated with the engravings in copies of Dickens’ first edition novels. FINE AND SCARCE FIRST EDITION. Some critics have stated that this novel is Dickens at his best, with the character Pecksniff being one of Dicken's most brilliant contributions to English literature. Critics generally agree that while MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT is somewhat roughly put together in its artistic structure, it more than makes up for it in its brilliant character development and descriptive prose that reveal Dickens’ talents at their finest. "In [the book] he displays the fulness of his preservative power, the ripeness of his humour, the richest flow of his satiric vivacity, and the culmination of his melodramatic vigour." Some declare that the character of Pecksniff to be one of Dickens' most brilliant contributions to English literature; Gissing calls him and Mrs. Gamp "masterpieces of genius in its happiest mood."

Description: 8vo. First edition in book form, second issue. Half dark blue morocco, blue cloth boards, gilt compartments, brown calf spine label. Marbled edges and endpapers. xiv, [1 14-line errata leaf], 624 pp. [38] plates steel engravings by H.K. Browne, plus engraved title and frontis, bound without the half-title. Vignette on title-page with amount on sign post transposed to read "100£" and seven studs in the trunk. The 100£ reward sign on title is often referred to as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver contend that there is no priority and that both plates were used in the monthly parts which preceded this first book edition. According to Smith "An earlier 13-line errata leaf exists with the same data that is found on the 14-line leaf; the setting was changed to 14-lines for a better balance." "A Tribute to Genius, Centenary Testimonial, 1812-1912" stamp with portrait of Dickens to ffep. Rubbing to extremities. Hinges cracked. Browning to plates as often, else quite clean to interior. Spot to plate facing p. 59. Short tear to tail of p. 463. Seems to have all points in "Dickens and Dickensiana" by John Podeschi except for wrappers. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts January 1843-July 1844 and first appeared in book format in July 1844. It was the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Dickens thought it to be his best work - which the author himself described as by "a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories". The theme is "selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion" through the characters, against the backdrop of 19th century America. Dickens's biographer describes Martin Chuzzlewit as marking "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the willful principle of a 'humour', but ones who are seen to change with the changing world, to live and grow" (Ackroyd, p. 392). Smith I.7. Peter Ackroyd, Dickens, 1990. Provenance: Bookplates of Joseph Beard of Alderley, Thomas H. Means, John Ruyle. Thomas H. Means (b. 1875, Virginia; d. 1965, Berkeley) was an agricultural engineer who worked in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Bureau of Soils and later opened a private consulting firm in San Francisco. John Ruyle was a book collector and printer from Berkeley, but I'm not 100% sure it's the same guy because his pencil inscription on the flyleaf doesn't seem like it matches the handwriting of his other inscribed books.but Means dying in Berkeley in '65 around the time Ruyle was writing and collecting there strengthens the connection.

Price: US$1267.38 + shipping

Description: - Chapman and Hall, London 1844, In-8 (14x21,5cm), 624pp., relié. Selon l'auteur lui-même, son meilleur ouvrage, "a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories" (letter to John Forster, 2 November 1843). [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] 624pp.

Dickens, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. Chapman and Hall, London, 1844.

Price: US$1802.50 + shipping

Description: Octavo. First issue with "all" the issue points of Smith and Hatton and Cleaver. Although, the present copy does have the pound sign before the £100. According to Hatton and Cleaver (p.86) the vignette title page was etched in triplicate, two of the etchings reading "£ 100" and one "100£". Since all these plates were contemporary and used simultaneously in the printing of the parts, there is no first state, or priority of the illustration as has been often cited in catalogs. A very handsome copy bound by Morrell in full tan polished calf triple ruled in gilt, raised bands with compartments fully gilt decorated, red and brown morocco spine labels gilt, all edges gilt. Frontispiece does have some scattered foxing, but the other plates are clean with an occasional spot or spots of foxing. An exceptionally nice copy.

Description: First edition in book form of the novel which the author himself described as by "a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories" (letter to John Forster, 2 November 1843), in a particularly handsome contemporary binding. Martin Chuzzlewit marked "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the wilful principle of a 'humour', but ones who are seen to change with the changing world, to live and grow" (Ackroyd, p. 392). The novel was first issued in monthly parts from January 1843 to July 1844 and published in book form on completion. Smith I.7. Peter Ackroyd, Dickens, 1990. Octavo (213 x 134 mm). DICKENS, Charles.. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.. London: Chapman and Hall, 1844, 1844.

Price: US$2566.53 + shipping

Description: First edition in book form, in the publisher's full morocco binding, the most deluxe of the three original binding options offered by the publisher, and very scarce. Martin Chuzzlewit was initially issued in monthly parts from December 1842 to July 1844, and in book form on completion. In an advertisement in the final monthly part, the publishers announced that it could be purchased in three formats: in cloth for £1 1s., in half morocco with marbled edges for £1 4s. 6d., and in full morocco with gilt edges for £1 6s. 6d. This full morocco binding is much scarcer than copies in the original cloth, which are themselves by no means common. This is the first copy of this novel in the full morocco binding that we have handled. The early owner of this copy, Howell Blood, whose signature, dated 1862, appears on a preliminary blank, was typical of the customer Chapman and Hall was targeting with their offer of deluxe, full morocco binding - the upwardly-mobile middle class, with pretensions to have the "best looking" copies of Britain's newest literary sensation. "The sons of small farmers, retail traders and small masters. were now benefiting from the reformed grammar schools and recently founded academies. A first generation Witham solicitor, Joseph Howell Blood, was clerk to the powerful attorney Jacob Howell Pattisson, related through his mother's side. By the 1840s, Blood had become clerk of the workhouse, clerk of the JP's bench and chairman of the Board of Guardians, the kind of post that would not have existed in the eighteenth century. By the 1850s he had set up his own legal practice in the town, later joined by his eldest son" (Davidoff & Hall, p. 265). The ownership signature may be that of either Joseph Howell (1806-1876), or his son, Howell (1837-1911), who was educated at Rugby and became a clergyman. Chapman and Hall continued to issue first edition sheets for many years after publication, binding up copies from their stock as required, including in this deluxe format. There are many variations between the morocco bindings of Dickens's novels, variations which have not yet been subject to a sustained bibliographical study identifying priority - the marbled endpapers and gilt turn-ins here are indicative of binding in the 1850s. Martin Chuzzlewit is placed by Dickens's biographer Peter Ackroyd as marking "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the wilful principle of a 'humour', but ones who are seen to change with the changing world, to live and grow" (Ackroyd, p. 392). Dickens wrote to John Forster on 2 November 1843 that "I think Chuzzlewit is a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories" (Pilgrim, Letters, III, pp. 590). Kremers pp. 79-82, 288; Smith I.7. Peter Ackroyd, Dickens, 1990; Leonore Davidoff & Catherine Hall, Family Fortunes Men and Women of the English Middle Class 1780-1850, 2013. Octavo (211 x 132 mm). Original purple pebble-grain morocco, spine lettered in gilt, spine bands and covers ruled in blind, gilt floral turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Engraved frontispiece and vignette title page (£ sign not transposed, no priority), 38 plates, by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz). Bound without half-title. With ink ownership signature of "Howell Blood, Witham 1862" to initial binder's blank, and his pencil ownership signature to facing binder's blank (see note). Slight splits and wear at head of joints but holding firm, offsetting to preliminaries, plates browned as often, early gatherings and first plate somewhat soiled with a few peripheral nicks and chips, letterpress leaves afterwards clean, small patch of tape repair in gutter of p. 32, 6 cm closed tear affecting text without loss to pp. 461/2, 3 cm closed tear not affecting text to pp. 603/4. A good copy.

Dickens, Charles. The Christmas Books : A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man. London Chapman and Hall & Bradbury and Evans 1844-1848, 1844.

Price: US$3208.16 + shipping

Description: Seventh editions of A Christmas Carol and The Chimes, and first editions of the later three titles. A set in handsome mid-nineteenth century fine vellum bindings, elaborately decorated in gilt to the spines with green and red title labels, the boards are slightly bevelled and embellished in the centre of each front panel with the original owner's monogram in gilt, bordered in triple-gilt and red, the borders repeated without monogram to the rear board, gilt decoration to all edges of the boards, flowing into fleur-de-lis patterned gilt dentelles, the text blocks with all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. To the front pastedown of each volume is the handsome colour armorial bookplate of a member of the Wilson Clan, with their motto: "Semper Vigilans" [Always Watchful]. The boards are somewhat grubby and rubbed, with cracking at several hinges and small nicks to the leather, the hinges are still reasonably secure, the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed. The text blocks are slightly foxed, marked and age toned, A Christmas Carol retains its colour frontispiece and the 3 colour plates, all in good order, The Chimes has some dog-eared page corners. The Cricket on the Hearth is bound without ads so presumed to be a later issue and The Battle of Life is in the most commonly found fourth state. A particularly attractive uniform set of early and first editions in contemporary fine bindings.

Dickens, Charles. The Life and Adventures of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. , 1844.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: [in the original cloth] With Illustrations by Phiz. London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. Original blind-stamped diagonally-ribbed blue cloth. First Edition in book form, published immediately at the conclusion of the 20-in-19 monthly serial parts (issued from January 1843 through July 1844). MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT marks Dickens's return to conventional serial parts, with separate plates, followed by a single octavo volume (as with NICHOLAS NICKLEBY in 1839); since then, he had tried weekly parts composed of a single illustrated folded sheet (MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK, consisting of both THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP and BARNABY RUDGE, published all-together in book form in three oversized volumes). CHUZZLEWIT was the first of Dickens's novels to lose readers during serialization; when the publisher Hall accordingly suggested Dickens's fees should be reduced (though it never happened), it created a rift that was not bridged until Chapman and Hall published A TALE OF TWO CITIES in 1859. Included are the forty plates by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), two of which had appeared in each part. This copy is in the primary cloth binding for MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT, blind-stamped diagonally-ribbed blue cloth. The errata leaf is in the usual 14-line state; the vignette title page has "100£" printed thus and has seven studs along the top edge of the trunk (Smith's state "1" -- one of three states, without precedence). The volume's condition is very good-plus -- unusually attractive externally, with only the slightest of wear at the extremities. The pale yellow endpapers appear to be original (with no evidence of anything underneath the paste-downs), but in our opinion they are too clean, too intact, and perhaps a slightly variant hue of yellow -- so we believe they are later, in other words that the volume was deftly re-cased, but without any external evidence. The "Phiz" plates (and the text) are quite clean and free of foxing -- though there is a marginal corner repair to the frontispiece. In all, this is clearly a better-looking copy than most. All of the thick octavo-format Dickens novels (the six others being PICKWICK PAPERS, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, DOMBEY AND SON, DAVID COPPERFIELD, BLEAK HOUSE and LITTLE DORRIT) are difficult to obtain in presentable original condition, as the bulk of text and plates was too heavy for the simple cloth bindings and delicate endpapers; however, in our experience, MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT (incidentally the only one of the seven to be bound in blue rather than olive-green cloth) is one of the toughest. Housed in a handsome morocco-backed cloth clamshell case. Smith I pp 63-67.

DICKENS, Charles. The life and adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. Chapman and Hall, London, 1844.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: With 40 illustrations by Phiz, including the frontispiece and engraved title containing 100£ on signpost; with the 14-line errata page. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, marbled endpapers; some of the plates are browned along the edges, the text is especially clean. From the library of William Law with his bookplate. First edition. Many critics have stated that this novel is Dickens at his best. Some further declare that the character of Pecksniff is one of Dickens' most brilliant contributions to English literature. The 100£ reward sign on title is often referred to as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver contend that there is no priority and that both plates were used in the monthly parts which preceded this first book edition.

Overall this is an exceptional copy of a title rarely found in better condition. Housed in an early fleece-lined green cloth clamshell case. Martin Chuzzlewit is listed as number five in Michael Sadleir's list of Charles Dickens comparative scarcities. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts January 1843 - July 1844. This, the first edition in book form, appeared on July 16, 1844 at 21s. and was the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Dickens thought it to be his best work - but his readers disagreed. In fact, Martin Chuzzlewit was the first of his novels to lose readers during serialization and the publisher Chapman and Hall suggested that Dickens's fees should be reduced. This never happened but it caused a rift that was not bridged until Chapman and Hall published A Tale of Two Cities in 1859. Dombey and Son (1848), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), Hard Times (1854) and Little Dorrit (1857) were all published by Bradbury and Evans.

Dickens, Charles. Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed.. , 1844.

Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Description: Rare autograph letter signed by great English novelist Charles Dickens. One page, octavo, folded, the letter reads, "Devonshire Terrace Eighteenth April 1844. My Dear Mitton, I am sorry to say that plan won't do. Because although Coutts’s were so prompt and polite last time, still they did say 'that it wasn’t the kind of note’ &c &c - as I wrote you at the time. Indeed, I remember to have often heard that they avoid discounting. I wish to Heaven you could think of any other way. I will come down today, between 2 and 3. I have not seen Thomson yet. He wrote that he was coming. Likewise that his house had not bedrooms enough. and talking wildly about Houses near Belgrave Square!! Faithfully Always / CD." The recipient, Thomas Mitton was a close friend and financial adviser of Dickens' to whom he wrote frequently, particularly concerning his frustrations with book deals and travel expenses. Debt was a primary motivating factor throughout Dickens' life despite his success as a novelist. In mid-1843, sales of Martin Chuzzlewit were falling off, and his wife, Catherine, was pregnant with their fifth child. Matters worsened when Chapman & Hall, his publishers, threatened to reduce his monthly income by £50 if sales dropped further. By the end of the year, Dickens saw a change in his fortunes with the publication of A Christmas Carol which sold out days after publication and was released in thirteen subsequent editions by the end of 1844. In near fine condition. An excellent association. English writer and social critic Charles Dickens created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius.

"It was a work written at the height of Dickens’ great powers, which would add to his considerable fame, bring a new work to the English language, increase the festivities at Christmastime, and contain his most eloquent protest at the condition of the poor" (John Mortimer).
