Price: US$175.00 + shipping
Condition: Very Good
Description: Memoirs of a young man: Lord Herbert tells of his adventures as a youth before wisdom and responsibility stayed his hand. With a preface by Horace Walpole, friend and original publisher, this is a first hand account of the life of a man who went on to do many things. A deist, he wrote of various aspects of religion, spirituality and the Church. He served as an ambassador to France, where he was quite popular among other political officers. This is a very nice leather binding with a gilt decorated band around the edge of both boards, a flat banded spine with gilt separations and lettering. One wonderful frontispiece portrait of the Lord Herbert reclining in a glade looking challenging directly at the viewer. Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Very Good Condition: 8vo, leather with gilt decoration around the edge along with flat banded spine with gilt lettering, red marbled endpapers. Some discoloration of the back paper facing the board (see Photo). Chip at top of spine with small section loose, scuff at spine and small evidence of splitting. Interesting marbled effect on page edges. Shadow discoloration of title page due to inks used on frontispiece. Age appropriate paper. The Life of Edward Lord Herbert, of Cherbury. Written by Himself with a Prefatory Memoir. Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne and Co. for John Ballantyne and Co. Edinburgh and John Murray, London. 1809. COLH1809CFGA-var
