Portrait of Eliot tipped onto front endpaper. Contemporary signature, possibly of interest, at the top of the title page in sepia ink. Eliot's partner George Henry Lewes had offered the reprinting rights to Tauchnitz, Osgood, and Albert Cohn, with Cohn paying £50 to undertake the project. Cohn, a literary scholar and cataloguer, succeeded Albert Asher as head of the Asher publishing house, for the most part continuing to use the Asher name and only rarely issuing works with the Albert Cohn imprint.
