Internal library marking (Garrett Biblical Institute). Recent owner's bookplate in each volume. Penzer did not note this variant binding. Burton wrongly believed that this region of modern Saudi Arabia was rich in gold and brought back about 25 tons of largely worthless material to be assayed.

Although Burton failed to unearth the vast amounts of gold he believed were in the region, the expedition, sponsored by the Egyptian Khedive Ismail I, was a major geographical and archaeological success. Complete with folding map, 6 colored plates, 10 uncolored plates, numerous illustrations in the text, and 32-page catalogue at end of vol. 2. Map and plates in pristine condition. Provenance: the prestigious Signet Library, with handsome "Society of Writers to her Majesty's Signet" bookplate with coat-of-arms on front pastedown of each volume and "Signet Library" written in ink on front free endpaper of each volume. London: Kegan Paul, 1879. Octavo, original ochre cloth. Two volumes. Very mild darkening to spines and slight rubbing to spine ends. A beautiful copy, rare in this condition.

First Edition of this sequel to Burton’s The Gold Mines Of Midian (1878), describing Burton’s second expedition through Midian in northwest Arabia. Midian became known as a highly rich source for gold, especially in the areas where ancient artifacts were located. Although Burton failed to find the vast amounts of gold he believed were in the region, he and his team succeeded in exploring and mapping a 600-mile territory and detailing eighteen ruined cities in the North and thirteen in the South. The expedition was sponsored by the Egyptian Khedive Isma’il I, for whom Burton brought back twenty-five tons of minerals to be assayed. Only 1000 copies of the book were printed. Penzer pp. 96-7.

Octavo, two volumes, original publisher's pictorial cloth stamped in black and gilt with gilt titles to the spine and front panel, black pictorial decorations to the front panel, beveled edges, black endpapers, illustrated with folding lithographic map of the land of Midian with water printed in blue in Vol. I, 6 chromolithographic plates including tissue-guarded frontispiece to each volume, 10 wood-engraved plates, and numerous additional illustrations. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page of Vol. I, “Dr. James Micklewright [?] with the best thanks of the author IAB.” In very good condition with rubbing to the boards and spine extremities, including a few small tears. Clean clipping to the upper right corner of the half title page of Vol. I. Rare signed and inscribed. Burton's 1877-78 second expedition into the Midian, which, like his first in 1877, was financed by the Khedive in Cairo as a search for gold. He mapped a 600-mile route through the northern and southern Midian recording its ruined ancient cities. For the Khedive in Cairo, he brought back 25 tons of minerals to be assayed. For himself, he seriously considered forming a company to exploit the oil resources of the Midian, but nothing came of it (Penzer, pp. 96-97; Spink 61).
