Raymond Chandler. The Lady in the Lake (First Edition). Knopf, New York, 1943.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First Edition. Original green cloth. Scarce first edition of Chandler's fourth book with only 6,000 copies produced. Features the private eye Philip Marlowe in Chandler's famous and popular hard-boiled mystery series, which helped redefine the entire mystery genre. Chandler's books have become true classics and read as much for their vivid descriptions of Los Angeles in the 1930's and 1940's as for their complicated and engaging plots. "The Lady in the Lake" was published under paper restrictions for the war effort and therefore makes this a much more difficult title to find in collectible condition. Light soiling to cloth, toning at edges and joints, minuscule corner bumps; owner signature; offsetting and tape residue to pastedowns, scattered areas of foxing; overall very good. Raymond Chandler's "The Lady in the Lake" is a classic noir detective novel that immerses readers in the gritty, atmospheric world of 1940s Los Angeles. Published in 1943, the novel is the fourth featuring Chandler's iconic private detective, Philip Marlowe, and it showcases Chandler's mastery of the hardboiled detective genre. The novel opens with Marlowe being hired by Derace Kingsley to find his estranged wife, Crystal. As Marlowe begins to investigate, he uncovers a complex web of deceit, betrayal, and murder that extends far beyond the initial missing persons case. Chandler weaves a taut and intricate plot, with Marlowe navigating the treacherous waters of the criminal underworld, corrupt police, and the affluent elite of Los Angeles. The narrative is driven by Marlowe's first-person perspective, providing readers with a glimpse into the detective's sharp wit, cynical worldview, and moral code. Chandler's writing style is characterized by its vivid descriptions, snappy dialogue, and a distinctive blend of toughness and lyricism. Marlowe's voice is both tough and introspective, and his narrative provides a window into the dark corners of a city that is as complex and morally ambiguous as the cases he takes on. "The Lady in the Lake" stands out for its evocative portrayal of Los Angeles, both as a sprawling urban landscape and as a metaphor for the hidden depths beneath the glamorous surface. Chandler's descriptions of the city's neighborhoods, from the opulent mansions to the seedy bars, contribute to the novel's atmospheric richness. The lake of the title becomes a symbolic and literal focal point, as Marlowe discovers the body of a woman submerged in the lake, setting off a chain of events that unravels the mystery at the heart of the novel. The characters in "The Lady in the Lake" are classic noir archetypes, from the femme fatale to the corrupt politician. Crystal Kingsley, the elusive lady in the lake, becomes a central figure in the unfolding drama, and Marlowe's interactions with her are fraught with tension and ambiguity. The novel explores themes of deception, greed, and the seedy underbelly of power and privilege, all against the backdrop of a war-torn world. Chandler's detective novels are known for their intricate plots, and "The Lady in the Lake" is no exception. As Marlowe digs deeper into the case, he peels back layers of deception and exposes the motivations of those involved. The novel keeps readers guessing until the final pages, with twists and turns that are characteristic of the noir genre. In addition to its compelling plot, "The Lady in the Lake" is notable for its commentary on the social and cultural landscape of post-war America. Chandler uses the detective novel as a lens to explore issues of corruption, inequality, and the disillusionment that followed the war. The novel reflects the anxieties and complexities of a society in transition. "The Lady in the Lake" is a classic example of Raymond Chandler's contribution to the hardboiled detective genre. The novel combines a gripping mystery with a vivid and atmospheric portrayal of Los Angeles, creating a work that continues to be celebrated for its literary merits and its influence on subsequent generations of crime fiction. Chandler's legacy lives on through the enduring popularity of Philip Marlowe and the impact of his unique brand of noir storytelling.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing. One of 6,000 copies. Publisher's green cloth, stamped in dark green to boards and spine; in the original purple and black dust jacket illustrated by Norman Reeves. About fine book with a hint of wear to spine ends, very light toning along upper edges of boards; very good unclipped dust jacket with light toning to spine and edges of rear panel, front panel illustration bright, mild wear to spine ends, slight split to bottom of rear flap hinge, small closed tear to bottom right of rear panel, a few tiny nicks to edges, and small surface tear to rear panel. Overall, a very attractive copy, much nicer than usual. Bruccoli A4.1.a. Published on November 1, 1943, The Lady in the Lake takes Detective Philip Marlowe out of Los Angeles, his usual stomping grounds, to investigate the disappearance of a wealthy businessman's estranged wife Crystal. The investigation quickly becomes complicated when the man Crystal claimed to have run off with is also unaware of her whereabouts, and Chandler adds stolen identities, police corruption, and a shootout with American sentries to further twist the plot. As with many of his novels, Chandler based The Lady in the Lake's plot on various short stories he had previously written for literary magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly and Black Mask. Unlike Dashiell Hammett's Continental Op and Sam Spade, who are widely considered the archetypal hard-boiled detective figures, Marlowe possesses a sensitivity underneath his tough exterior that distinguishes him from similar detective characters in the genre. In 1947, The Lady in the Lake was adapted into a film starring Robert Montgomery, Audrey Totter, and Lloyd Nolan.

Description: Known for cannibalizing his short stories, Chandler drew upon his previously published "Bay City Blues," "No Crime in the Mountains," and the eponymously named "The Lady of the Lake." Fueled by his patriotism and written shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Chandler makes several references within the narrative to America's involvement in WWII. Where most authors fill the back of the dust jacket's with accolades, endorsements, and self-publicity, Chandler uses the whole of the rear jacket pleading for his readers to purchase War Bonds and Stamps and in so doing, "buy a share in the miracle" that is funding the war. It is rare to find a copy of this most notable and scarce work (only 6,000 in the first print run) in such a beautiful wartime jacket. Bruccoli, A 4.1.a. Very slight lean, small spot to fore edge, gentle pressing to spine tips and front corners, still near fine in near fine, faintly toned dust jacket with very shallow chipping to corners, in mylar cover.

The publisher’s price of $2.00 is present on the front inner flap and faint staining to rear. Inner board of book stamped by "Bertrand Smith’s Acres of Books," with its Ohio address, later moved to California. The bookstore appeared in The Jane Austen Book Club film in 2007. The Lady in the Lake is a 1943 detective novel by Raymond Chandler featuring, as do all his major works, the Los Angeles private investigator Philip Marlowe. Notable for its removal of Marlowe from his usual Los Angeles environs for much of the book, the novel's complicated plot initially deals with the case of a missing woman in a small mountain town some 80 miles (130 km) from the city. The book was written shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and makes several references to America's new involvement in World War II. A great first edition in exceptional condition.
