Description: Early (not numbered) printing of this, the first edition, first published in 1895 with two variant bindings. Illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling. Heavy wear around the edges of covers including bumped/frayed corners and spine ends. Apparent liquid stain to bottom 1/3 of spine wrap and along bottom edge of rear board. Previous owners' inscriptions on front endpaper. Hinges cracked and half title page completely separated from binding. Very loose binding and several instances of split binding throughout book. Tanning pages with some blemishes around the edges from handling. Smells faintly of smoke.

No bumpiing or wear. Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound. gilt top page edges. Very small dent to fore-edge of front board - no breakage to cloth. Previous owner name neatly penned on front free endpaper. Illustrations throughout. 303 pages.

Description: Two smartly bound volume of poetry from Rudyard Kipling, the first edition of The Five Nations. Two volumes. Written by Rudyard Kipling, an English novelist, short-story writer, poet, and journalist, best known for his novel The Jungle Book. This set includes: The Seven Seas, 1897. Third edition. Originally published in 1896. A collection of poetry, with titles including "Hymn Before Action", "In the Neolithic Age", "The Lost Legion", "The Mary Gloster", and "McAndrew's Hymn". The Five Nations, 1903. First edition. With the issue point of 'David' to page 56 line 9 (that was later changed to 'Saul'), but lacking the publisher's advertisements dated 'July 1903'. This work is split into two sections: the first covering a wide range of subjects and the second section entitled "Service Songs" containing poems about British soldiers at the turn of the twentieth century. Bound in half red calf with patterned boards. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpapers dated 1904. Very Good
