Kipling, Rudyard. THE JUNGLE BOOK. , 1894.

Price: US$575.00 + shipping

Description: Decorated by J. Lockwood Kipling, C.I.E. New York: The Century Co., 1894. Original olive-green cloth decorated in gilt. First American Edition, published on the same day (May 22nd) as the English edition. Many of the illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard's father. This book and THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK, along with KIM and JUST SO STORIES, constitute Kipling's best-loved work: For there is a unique magic in the JUNGLE BOOKs from the moment the infant Mowgli enters the wolf's lair, and the moonlight is blacked out at the mouth of the cave by the great head of the tiger Shere Khan, and his roar fills it with thunder. There is magic too in the jungle, so glowingly portrayed, with its danger-haunted thickets, and the monkeys threading its frail liana ways, the enchanted land of which Mowgli is to become the master; and in the animals who are his friends and mentors -- Bagheera, the sleek and terrible panther; Baloo, the wise old bear; Hathi, the elephant; Kaa, the gigantic python who makes a nest for Mowgli in his coils; Akela, the leader of the wolf-pack; and the bandarlog, chattering outcasts of the tree tops, whose only wish is to be noticed, and who immediately abandon every task they have begun. [Birkenhead] This volume is in near-fine condition (spine cloth a little darkened, a trace of rubbing at the extremities); as with most copies we have encountered, in the binding process a leaf was glued down under the rear endpaper. Richards A77; Stewart 124.

Kipling, Rudyard. The Jungle Book. London: Macmillan and Co., 1894.

Price: US$1750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. First edition, first printing. Publisher's blue boards, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt, green coated endpapers. Near fine, with a touch of toning to spine, light rubbing to spine ends, lightly bumped bottom right corner of front board, front free endpaper cleanly and discreetly reattached, ownership inscription to half-title page, a hint of dampstaining to bottom margin of title page, and very light spotting to some pages at front and rear of book. Overall, a bright and sturdy copy. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay.

KIPLING, Rudyard. The Jungle Book [In Original Publisher's 1894 Dustjacket]. The Century Co, New York, 1894.

Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Description: First American Edition. Original green cloth, embossed designs and gilt lettering and illustrations at spine and covers. Illustrations by J. L. Kipling, W. H. Drake, and P. Frenzeny. This copy with most of the original publisher's printed [and illustrated with elephant at front panel] tan and green stamped dustjacket. "Love of animals, imagination about animals, the placing of anthropomorphic words in their mouths, is the prevailing whim of the English, and The Jungle Books, for that reason, have brought joy and enthusiasm to many a heart. Mowgli, the wolf-child, and wolf-reared children are true things. Baloo, and Bagheera and Kaa are not only household words in our nurseries and school-rooms, they are the wisdom of the ages and the pleasure of the hour in the studies and boudoirs of the parents. Rikki-tikki-Tavi is supreme in the hearts of our old ladies. Toomai of the Elephants is sheer Kheddah lore. A great mastering of the wild forest and its fauna, of the aboriginal folk whom Jan Chinn controlled, is herein displayed, a lore before which the scientist will bow down." [ George MacMunn, in Rudyard Kipling, Craftsman]. Near Fine attractive copy, previous owner name at front endpaper, in Good dustjacket, lacking front flap and top two inches of front panel.
