Description: Other than a rubber stamp to the end pages, this is a tight and unmarked copy-" The life and times of a complex genius and the masterpiece he created In the century and a half since Audubon's death, his name has become synonymous with wildlife conservation and natural history. But few people know what a complicated figure he was--or the dramatic story behind The Birds of America. Before Audubon, ornithological illustrations depicted scaled-down birds perched in static poses. Wheeling beneath storm-wracked skies or ripping flesh from freshly killed prey, Audubon's life-size birds looked as if they might fly screeching off the page. The wildness in the images matched the untamed spirit in Audubon--a self-taught painter and self-anointed aristocrat who, with his buckskins and long hair, wanted to be seen as both a hardened frontiersman and a cultured man of science. In truth, neither his friends nor his detractors ever knew exactly who Audubon was or where he came from. Tormented by a fog of ambiguities surrounding his birth, he reinvented himself ceaselessly, creating a life as dramatic as his fictionalizations of it. But when he came east at thirty-eight--broke and desperate to find a publisher for his Birds--he ran squarely into a scientific establishment still wedded to convention and suspicious of the brash newcomer and his grandiose claims. It took Audubon fifteen years to prevail in both his project and his vision. How he triumphed and what drove him is the subject of this gripping narrative." About the Author: William Souder is the author of A Plague of Frogs and a frequent science contributor to The Washington Post and other publications. He lives near Minneapolis.

Description: Half-Cloth, x, 514 pages, illustrations; 25 cm. Tight, clean copy. Stated First Edition. Dust jacket, with light shelfwear, protected in a mylar cover. "Rhodes shows us young Audubon arriving in New York from France in 1803, his illegitimacy a painful secret, speaking no English but already drawing and observing birds. We see him falling in love, marrying the wellborn English girl next door, crossing the Appalachians to frontier Kentucky to start a new life, fashioning himself into an American just as his adopted country was finding its identity. Here is Audubon exploring the wilderness of birds--pelicans wading the shallows of interior rivers, songbirds flocking, passenger pigeons darkening the skies--and teaching himself to revivify them in glorious life-size images. Now he finds his calling: to take his hundreds of watercolor drawings to England to be engraved in a great multivolume work called The Birds of America. Within weeks of his arrival there in 1826, he achieves remarkable celebrity as 'the American Woodsman.' He publishes his major work as well as five volumes of bird biographies enhanced by his authentic descriptions of pioneer American life. Audubon's story is an artist's story but also a moving love story. In his day, communications by letter across the ocean were so slow and uncertain that John James and his wife, Lucy, almost lost each other in the three years when the Atlantic separated them--until he crossed the Atlantic and half the American continent to claim her. Their letters during this time are intimate, moving, and painful, and they attest to an enduring love. We examine Audubon's legacy of inspired observation--the sonorities of a wilderness now lost, the brash life of a new nation just inventing itself--precisely, truthfully, lyrically captured. And we see Audubon in the fullness of his years, made rich by his magnificent work, winning public honor: embraced by writers and scientists, f ted by presidents and royalty. Here is a revelation of Audubon as the major American artist he is. And here he emerges for the first time in his full humanity--handsome, charming, volatile, ambitious, loving, canny, immensely energetic. Richard Rhodes has given us an indispensable portrait of a true American icon. / Richard Rhodes is the author of twenty books, including novels and works of history, journalism and letters. His The Making of the Atomic Bomb won a Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, a National Book Award, and a National Book Critics Circle Award. Dark Sun, about the development of the hydrogen bomb, was one of three finalists for a Pulitzer Prize in History. A Kansas native, he has frequently explored American history and biography in articles for national magazines. He lives in Half Moon Bay, California." - Publisher. Size: 8vo

Robert R. Gillogly. Wow! Wings of Wonder, Sermons for the Birds. Asterisk Publications, 2004.

Price: US$30.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Wow! Wings of Wonder: Sermons for the Birds by Robert R. Gillogly was published by Asterisk Publications, Peoria, Illinois, in 2004. Not an ex-library copy, this 301-page, 6" X 9", First Limited Edition(Number 164 of 200) offering is in NF-/VG- condition. The book's only flaw, so far as I can see, are a couple short, whitish-colored, thin markings in the lower-right corner of the front cover board that are practically unnoticeable. The book is like new. Its dust jacket is also in stellar shape, although there is some quite modest shelf wear at top and bottom edges of jacket's spine, and some random, light, dull scuff marks on the front jacket cover section. From back jacket cover section, "[The author] doesn't claim to be a research-centered ornithologist, but his observations on the world of birds are remarkable. His special talent is his ability to use his vast reservoir of knowledge to derive lessons that can permeate the lives of all of God's creatures, including his flock of parishioners in The First Federated Church of Peoria. These bird-related observations are cleverly fashioned into a series of sermons that require the attentive listener to speculate on how 'just a robin' or a 'hard to swallow' or 'consider the ravens' etc., can be transformed into a meaningful Sunday message. The results are invariably challenging and satisfying. The compilation of these well-annotated, sprightly yet erudite sermons is just as attractive in its written form", that from Joseph M. Chamberlain, at that time President and Director Emeritus, The Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, Chicago, Formerly Asst. Director, American Museum of Natural History, New York. Presented in some 24 chapters, just some of the sermon titles/topics include "Spiritual Swifties", "Don't Blame the Stork!", "The Great Blue Wonder", "A Message from the Cranes", "A Touch of Eden", "On Dodos", and "Egrets, Egrets, I've Had a Few!". Almost as captivating as the author's often very funny but always sensible messages are the nearly 70 Drawings, Photographs, and Sketches(the vast majority in vivid, arresting color), executed by a bevy of renowned artists, among them Roger Tory Petersen, John A. Ruthven, Mitchell Tolle Studio and Gallery, Norman Rockwell, Albrecht Durer, Edward Hicks, Norman Arlott, Patti Middleton, Betty Wilson, John James Audubon, and Ramon G. Teja. Also included are Contents pages, and Personal Notes/Resource Bibliography. This is an extremely lovely, yet still highly practical, book. Thanks very much!!

Description: nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Audubon's history dates from the 1600s, with several deeds showing purchases of land in 1682. Centuries later, in the early 1900s, owners of the seven existing farmsteads incorporated into a borough named in honor of naturalist John James Audubon. Nicknamed 'Mudubon' in the 1920s and 1930s, the community is now recognized as 'the Most Patriotic Small Town in America,' having been the home of three Medal of Honor recipients, two of whom have naval vessels named in their memory. Audubon highlights the history of this unique borough that served as the weekend retreat for heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney and was the home of World War II bomber pilot and actor John McKee.

Brinkley is the history commentator for CNN and a contributing editor to the magazines Vanity Fair and American Heritage. A public spokesperson on conservation issues, Brinkley serves as an editor at Audubon Magazine. He joined the faculty of Rice University as a professor of history in 2007. Historian Brinkley presents an in-depth account of John Kerry's experiences in the Navy during the war in Vietnam, and shows how these experiences shaped his character. Kerry, a Yale graduate who had enlisted, rose to the rank of lieutenant, saw action, and received the Purple Heart three times. After the war, Kerry was active in the organization Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Brinkley has uncovered documents relating to a campaign by Nixon aides to discredit Kerry, who later became a United States senator from Massachusetts.

"From the beginning, my aims in this enterprise were clear and ambitious. I wanted first and foremost to do justice to the full artistic genius of Audubon, going back to his intial efforts, and yourthful experiments, and on through the complete mastering of his art in his middle years. thus I begin with several of his drawings recently discovered in the cellars of the Natural History Museum in La Rochelle, demonstrating the enormouse strides Audubon made very quickly in his career, and go on to include a number of his mature works from the great collection of the New York Historical Society. The texts chosen to accompany his art are here to illustrate the man behind the paintings." from the Acknowledgements by Pascal Jeanjean Publisher. This is a very large and heavy Portfolio, so shipping will be more than our standard rates, please inquire. As New! I removed the original shrink wrap from this book in order to get the information to list it online. ; Limited Edition; 11 1/2 x 15 "

Description: The John James Audubon Portfolio: A Selection of the Original Drawings and Watercolors Used in the Making of Birds of America Accompanied by a Choice of Audubon's Writings, 2004. Folio. Cloth hardcover case. Fans of John James Audubon, the naturalist's art, or rare and unusual books, do not pass up the opportunity to own this gorgeous edition of high quality reproductions of Audubon's original watercolors. The portfolio is presented along with key notes and correspondence by Audubon and a biographical introduction, creating an impression of the man himself and his development as an ornithologist. Printed in a 14-point font on 200g deckled cream stock, 22 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches open, and French bound (which is to say unbound) in an olive linen clamshell case, each copy is numbered from a printing of only 2500, and illustrated with 48 paintings by the artist, including some from Birds of America and also early works recently rediscovered in the Natural History Museum of La Rochelle. The real pièce de résistance here is the portfolio of individual reproductions, identical to those in the text. With a printed area of up to 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches, on heavyweight 300g stock with a sheet size of about 11 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches, these prints can be leafed through, removed for consideration, or framed as art.
